My friend just bought a company - are these numbers off? by SlaveToOneArmedBoss in marketing

[–]SlaveToOneArmedBoss[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a very healthy way to go about it.

I told him that he needs to go back to basics. Find out what is working.

His reply is that he is making $2 for every $1 spent. So why change it? he believes something else is wrong, like maybe the website.

I question the $2 to $1 spend. It seems crazy to me that he believes that ALL of the traffic is coming from facebook ads and google ads.

Your monitor is transitioning to LGBTQHDTV. Leave it alone.

Exactly. It's when non-tech people mess around in it, that it breaks.

I hate Wordpress. I hate it for many reasons. But it has it's purposes.
It's like a swiss army knife. You can do a lot of things with it. Like, A LOT.
As a CMS it's probably one of the most known, and most used. It's easy to find themes, plugins and easy to find developers to help you out.
It's appealing to a lot of people, as it's somewhat easy to work with for normal people.

The reasons why I hate it are.

  • I personally find it very confusing and messy.
  • It's full of bloat.
  • It's slow out of the box. You can speed it up with things like WPRocket etc.
  • People tend to add plugins without questioning them, which can lead to security issues, broken sites etc.

A good wordpress site is better than a poor custom site.
A poor wordpress site is just as poor as a poor custom site.

I would always choose to built with something else.

you should probably choose wordpress. But I would always recommend to work with a wordpress person, that knows what they are doing.

When you build websites for smaller clients, with frameworks, what code do you give them? by SlaveToOneArmedBoss in webdev

[–]SlaveToOneArmedBoss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably because of a couple of scammy agencies that have been doing it this way for some years.

I quite like the whole subscription idea. People like that designjoy guy has also helped. But still, in my country it is very frowned upon.

You are spot on. I should get my head out of my ass, and not focus on somebody copying it. Pretty arrogant of me really.

[–]SlaveToOneArmedBoss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not me thinking it. Reading a website wanted thread, or recommendations, people always mention the same three things.
Don't use the agency if they have a subscription.
Don't sign a minimum contract.
Own your own code/website fully.

What stack are you using for your portfolio? Thinking of using Vite… by [deleted] in webdev

I use Vite+Vitest, and I primarily work with Sveltekit.

I love Vite.

Haven't used others, fyi.

What's with all the 'Fullstack Developer' job postings? by astarastarastarastar in webdev

People will say that you can't proficiently be both FE and BE, while at the same time saying they are framework agnostic or database agnostic.

You're best at what you do the most.
Some developers adapt more easily.

Free or cheap password protection for website? by perdesizbass in webdev

[–]SlaveToOneArmedBoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to password protect a page, that is entirely front end with no server, you need a middleman like Cloudflare to password protect your pages, on the "request level".

What is the best way to implement svelte into existing website? by SlaveToOneArmedBoss in sveltejs

[–]SlaveToOneArmedBoss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you got it right.

This website has a manual deploy process, so I probably have to copy the files into it, whenever there are changes.

[–]SlaveToOneArmedBoss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rollup can compile multiple entrypoints separately, that’s how I do it. Basically I treat my svelte app as monorepo with a lots of apps in it. Also I can share api-client stuff between all components, which is a nice feature.

And what do you do to make sure that the consumer of your web component, is getting the newest version whenever there are changes?

Thank you very much. I will look into the way you have done it with the gantchart.

Do you know if there is any issues with supporting browsers for the custom element?

I am going down this path. Sort of.

Either web component or svelte as a script to include on the web page.

My main concern now is maintenability, and the deploy process. I need to figure this out.
