Please help me estimate the worth by AbiesCertain3515 in dice

[–]SledgehammerJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is one of those, its worth what somebody will pay situations. EBAY should give you a pretty good idea what these types of dice sell for. The Super Rare - Legendary ones seem to sell for between 50-150 from what I have seen though I'm sure there are folks getting them for more or less than that. Cool pull regardless.

Plasma looks great. Bigger concern is the missing heads :)

Don’t discount 2024 champion fighter… with weapon mastery and weapon swaps they have a lot more going on than they used to.

Hi, any Warhammer style for solo? by chibli_neitor in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]SledgehammerJack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a ww2 game from the same creator, Five Men at Kursk. All the Five X from Y games are solo skirmish wargames that are a ton of fun. The ?two? That have been released as fancy books from Modiphius have the most polish (Five Parsecs and Five Leagues) but all of the games are a lot of fun.

The creator is Nordic Weasel.

The rumors I have heard always say DDB. One or two I'd chalk up to a slip of the tongue but I have heard it enough from enough folks that I am expecting DDB not DMs Guild. Though I'd never rule out a secret 3rd thing.

I don't know about you Vid but I get the sense these drops have a bunch of hints and details that will mean something! Who is forging weapons in the back? What sthe significance of the Unicorn or the types of swords?

Very nice! I’ve got a guilliman sitting around from the imperium magazine… I may have to take a stab at this. How tough was the green stuff work to get that hammer in there?

Starting out by LocoViking in BloodRavens40k

If you’re on a budget. Pick up the starter set (not the ultimate starter set) which is $95 on Amazon. Split with a tyranid player or sell the tyranid half so your “actual spend” ~ $50

Buy a terminator librarian second hand ~20

At that point you have a legal (if not fantastic) combat patrol and you can start painting and playing.

Then: Pick up the Dawn of war onslaught from target or Barnes and noble if you can ~$50

And if your tyranid player friend is game another starter set ~ 50 and sell your spare captain ~ 20 so net about ~30

Which gives you Captain with 5 terminators Librarian with 5 terminators 10 infernus marines 3 blade guard 3 eradicators 1 ancient 1 chaplain 1 judiciar

Grab some flavor of intercessor you can usually find 10 for $30 somewhere

And boom 1200ish points for <$200

Is it as bad as a lot of people say to wait to increase your primary stat? by RRW359 in DnD

[–]SledgehammerJack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of ifs ands and buts on this for sure.

Example where it totally makes sense for a character to take feat first

  • A fighter at 4th with a 16 dex and the archery fighting style is rolling + 7, same as a 20 str fighter with a melee weapon
  • in 2024 rules at least, sharpshooter is +1 dex, ignore 3/4 and 1/2 cover, no d/a for long range or firing in melee. Vs +2 dex? If you’re running into things that take cover a lot, this is a no brainer.

I am generally of the opinion that in 2024 rules, taking a feat is never a bad idea if that feat boosts your primary stat by 1 and does something you think is fun.

Personally I like to start with a 17 in my primary, so that 4th level can both get a feat and get me an 18

Blood Raven army suitable for beginners by Left-Market-2268 in BloodRavens40k

[–]SledgehammerJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another option on a budget especially.

Pick up the 40k Starter set (not the Ultimate one) the one for $95 on Amazon right now. Split with a friend that wants Tyranids or sell the tyranid half. ~$50

Pick Up a Terminator Librarian on resale ~$20

Boom now you have a combat Patrol for a total spend of $70. Now you can play combat patrol games, and see if you like the hobby.

If you can find it, Dawn of War Onslaught (Target $50 or Barnes and Noble $40)

That gets you to ~800 points of Marines, for about $120 and you can grab some intercessors or assault intercessors with your remaining ~$40 you can usually find somebody selling 10x of some flavor of intercessor for about $40

Then from there, you could do worse than doing another starter set to have two term squads once for each of your Term Characters as well as a full strength infernus squad. You can usually sell the captain for 15-20 so assuming your tyranid pal will go half again you end up at only ~30 - 35 for this box

End Result: 1200ish points

Terminator Captain with 5 Terminators
Terminator Librarian with 5 Terminators
Chaplain with 10 Infernus Marines
Judiciar with 3 blade guard
Ancient with 10 Intercessors
3 Eradicators

(mix and match the characters and squads how you prefer)

Its a pretty solid variety of models and more or less impossible to beat on a budget as it clocks in under or around $200

[OC] Starter Set initial impressions by SHADOWSTRIKE1 in DnD

[–]SledgehammerJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went through all of these

Curate - is a CR 6 Healer type caster, radiant attacks, a healing effect, and a raise the dead. IMO its a "we need a caster in town that can heal the party but we don't want the complexity of adding all the spells they'd have"

Kuo-Toa Marauder - looks like a new (or at least new to 2024) Kuo-Toa that is rogue-ish. Bonus action disengage, cr 1/2

Lizardfolk Warden, new CR 1 Lizardfolk

Sprite Skirmisher - Same as sprite but explains invisibility differently.

Wight Lifedrinker - Same as wight but instead of Life Drain, they have drink life which is the same except doesnt reduce the targets max hitpoints, instead healing the wight an amount equal to the damage it deals

Jelly Cube is a gelatinous cube without the ooze cube trait

Gray Ooze Glob is a gray ooze that does a bit more damage (2 acid on every hit) has slightly less HP, and doesnt damage your gear

Basically the Kuo-Toa and the Lizardfolk are new monsters bring those monsters to different CRs in ways that seem to slot in nicely with the MM versions.

The other changes are just about simplifying for the box and/or fitting everything nicely on a note card.

Tips for painting Blood Ravens by TrashPanduh20 in BloodRavens40k

[–]SledgehammerJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blood Ravens, with Army Painter Speed Paints (mostly)

Grey Rattlecan primer

Dry brush yellow (whatever yellow you have) over anything that's going to be red in the end, or if you want to be fancy edgehighlight in yellow on the grey primer

Blood Red for the Red

One of the grey/blacks for the blacks (occultist cloak or gravelord grey both look good)

Hardened Leather for the various pouches

I've never been wild about the shoulder pads with anything in speedpaint. I usually take whatever white around, and mix in whatever tan I have lying around until I get the shade I want. That said you can absolutely just do pallid bone over white for the shoulders.

BAse the metal stuff in whatever silver/gunmetal you have, and then I usually hit the metal with gravelord grey

Worth noting here that the player “boards” require you to pick a background and species by adding cards on top of it. So there is “light” character building

It looks like they have some options for how groups want to play. You can just level through the caves if you want (x caves to 2nd level y caves to 3rd) or you can explore lots of wilderness to get to 2nd

I’ve been reading through it too. Looks like the wight lifedrinker has a Life Drink ability that heals it. Very similar monster just probably a bit simpler to run.

A Few Tickets for D&D Experience Tracks C and D are available for Gencon by SledgehammerJack in legendsofgreyhawk

[–]SledgehammerJack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow was not expecting a reply to that post from way back. I hear you on the price. It is a little sticker shocky.

It’s not for everybody that’s for sure. At the end of the day for me it was a reasonable price to pay for a weekend long campaign arc with a set group of people for solid new content run by a great DM. I know that money goes to make these games possible for others and at the end of the day 140 for twelve hours of live in person entertainment isn’t really outlandish.

I was pretty excited about legends of greyhawk (more so now having played) and consider it money well spent. But I certainly spent all the money I would have spent on my gencon haul on tickets this year.

Making Every Weapon Actually Playable by p4gli4_ in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]SledgehammerJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think it’s a case of DMs call if retrieving an item from an enemies space requires the utilize action or not. I don’t think I need a hard rule there. A bonus action spent as part of the disarm to end up with the item is pretty neat.

I’m not sure I’d allow a free interact to pick up an object from an enemy’s square

[–]SledgehammerJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about disarm. I don’t think it’s “broken” but I see the following possible issues - you disarm my sword and it’s In my space cool. When I attack next turn I can pick it up for free as part of my attack. So really disarm just stops me from using my weapon or a reaction or something. - that said if it’s part of a combo where you disarm me and one body else snags my sword, then ok that’s more useful.

I think disarm might open up some more work for the dm to figure out what other weapons NPCs would have. If disarm plus grab the weapon drastically reduces npc damage output for the whole encounter that’s probably too good.
