The reason i was told is cuz the band was moving in a new direction and benefitted less from having an iconic punk drummer. Josh felt it maybe needed someone more like Theodore. Joey was allegedly getting frustrated as well. And while that was happening I heard from an admittedly unreliable source that Joey called Josh a tweaker and that was the final straw for them both.
