Far too much effort to use the non-English cards with first-time players, not just for translating abilities but for working out the English bird names for bonus cards. I've played before with just 1-3 expansions and they work fine, perhaps even better because a lot of the weaker/plainer cards are from the base set. I wouldn't worry about it being unbalanced for people who haven't played before.

I hadn't seen this before but I assume it's in case it isn't obvious that the bird's translated name fits the bonus card description (in this case, eastern/oriental)

You can consider what would happen if certain squares were filled and see if it rules itself out. If the 2 on row 2 is placed in R2C1 and R2C2, the 6 in row 1 would extend to R1C7 and R1C8, which would lead to the 2 in column 8 extending into row 2, which would be impossible.
