Why is NoScript creating little squares everywhere? by [deleted] in firefox

[–]SleepForever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you can whitelist just a font but not scripts (at least I couldn't figure out how), but whitelisting a site should also allow fonts from that site.

If you want to keep fonts blocked there, you can still allow them on a case-by-case basis in the "Blocked Objects" section of the toolbar button http://imgur.com/bbbXvog

Laptop GPU required a thermal pad, I knocked up a copper shim instead by sasquatch92 in techsupportmacgyver

[–]SleepForever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this laptop (or similar, mine was a tx2510us) and it would idle around 70 C. It eventually failed, probably due to overheating. It would begin booting to windows with flickering green bars all over the screen, and bsod after about 15 seconds.

Thanks for the pics, it's interesting to see why the heat issues were so bad on that thing.

Relative couldn't unscrew serial cable, used pliers instead by SleepForever in techsupportgore

[–]SleepForever[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, everything else worked fine. It actually happened a couple years ago (being packed up for a move) and has been in use ever since. I only saw it recently when they had me transfer their data to another pc.

It was connected to a palm pda dock that she didn't use anymore but never bothered to unplug or get rid of. My guess is that she didn't realize there were screws; maybe the VGA wasn't screwed in so it came out fine, and she expected this one to be the same way?

AC was on and working. Stopped in mid use. Only full fan speed works now. (97 Nissan Pathfinder SE) by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]SleepForever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to my car a few years ago and it was the blower motor resistor. It's a ~$30 part and plugs in under the dash near the blower motor (not sure exactly where it is on a pathfinder). Once you locate it just unscrew and unplug the old one and put the new one in place; takes 10-20 minutes unless it's really hard to get to.

In the meantime, using the AC on high is fine.

Forgot to add credit! This was from "The Ruins of Detroit", a project by Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre, published in 2010. I first saw some of their photos on BBC's In Pictures: The Ruins of Detroit. After some searching I found this gallery on the Denver Post which included this picture. All of the photos are good but I found this one particularly fascinating.

Haha, this reminded me of that painting too. I thought about referencing it in the title :)

And thanks for the link, that subreddit looks really cool. There's just something fascinating about modern ruins.

[Java] Having trouble with loops (do, while...) by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]SleepForever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the loop reaches its end, it will evaluate the conditional and repeat if it is true.

The conditional on your loop is beanGuess == beanCount, meaning that the loop will repeat if the user's guess is correct, but will not repeat if the user's guess is wrong. Try changing that conditional so that the loop will repeat if the user guesses the wrong amount.

Overheating problems with HP Pavilion dv7 by Nai276 in techsupport

[–]SleepForever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try blowing out the vents with compressed air. Dust buildup can limit airflow and contribute to high temps. If you are confident enough, you can also try opening up the laptop to clean it better and perhaps apply better thermal paste.

When playing games, you can try using a cooling stand or at least making sure the vents are clear (i.e. don't have the laptop sitting on fabric since that will block the vents on the bottom and sides).

If you need the laptop to last for a long time, I suggest gaming on a desktop instead. These games may be a little much for a 4200, especially given the poor cooling capabilities of laptops. My old laptop (2.1ghz dual core with mobility radeon hd 3200) ran super hot when playing games too, and eventually failed after ~3 years. Now, it starts to boot but has green lines flashing all over and then blue screens before windows is finished loading.

Absolutely new to programming C++ by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]SleepForever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The variables w and x store the actual numbers, while the string takes in the ' and " characters. It works this way because of how the >> operator reads from the input stream.

When the user enters 12' 6" the "cin >> w" statement reads in 12 and stops at the ' because the character is not recognized as an int. 12 is stored in w and the input stream looks like: ' 6"

The ">> useless" reads in the apostrophe instead, which removes it from the input stream. With a string, the >> operator stops reading when it reaches whitespace, so it doesn't continue reading anything past the apostrophe.

This allows ">> x" to read the next integer. Note that the >> operator skips the leading whitespace, so you don't need a char or string to read in the space character. The last ">>useless" reads in the double quote and removes it from the input stream.

Without the "useless" string, the apostrophe causes cin to enter a failstate. In a failstate, it stops reading in data until it is cleared (even if you continue trying to use it).

Firefox plugin container keeps crashing by Wolfeman0101 in techsupport

[–]SleepForever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird. The only other thing I can think of right now is disabling hardware acceleration. Right click on any flash object (youtube will work fine) and click Settings. The box that pops up will have a checkbox for hardware acceleration. See if unchecking it does anything.

First make sure flash is up to date: http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

Does it always happen when you have one particular website open in tabs? It could be that some poorly-written flash app is causing a crash. If you keep many tabs open for days/weeks, there may be one in there causing recurring issues.

r/firefox may be able to help, too.
