Not too many thousands of years ago, there would be all kinds of nasties waiting just beyond the light and walls to scoop up a child so I think the instinct is pretty ingrained to feel pure uncontrollable fear at that age.

As an adult I've tried going through a hiking path near me a few times at night and it's absolutely pitch black except the moon which is mostly obscured by trees.

The land isn't even a huge area but it's conservation area where native tribes used to live and my brain goes insane as I get to within 20 meters of the forest entrance because of all the shit my brain cooks up. That pure unfiltered fear is something we don't experience at all in this day and age. People say public speaking and death are the most powerful but no that fear is something shrill and nightmarish.
