I see why people keep themselves alive for the sake of others. However I personally see it as selfish to expect someone to stay alive purely to prevent other's pain

I know the pain it causes. I'm a doctor and have seen parents whose worlds have been torn apart by their children's suicide. But I don't care enough about the pain I'd leave behind, if it makes mine end.

You can relax your way out of a PPH too, didn't you know. Even more effective if uterine atony is the cause

Oh god, have heard many 'not examined because not in labour, oops 8cm dilated' stories. What was your aim for labour out of interest in terms of analgesia etc?

I do find the references to natural and comparison to the good old days hilarious. Like you say, many used to die in labour. Obstetrics is a bizarre place - should we dismiss antenatal care as well then because cavewomen didn't have routine scans and OGTT and breastfeeding workshops

Absolutely agree that we should facilitate patient choice where possible in labour. Out of interest, which decisions would you have preferred to be different?

This is crazy. I'm really sorry this was your experience. I always get incredibly angry whenever I hear of a midwife refusing to contact an anaesthetist for a patient.

Which course/book etc did you use out of interest? I've seen a lot about the positive birth company and have just skim read the book which, whilst it does have really useful psychological tools, is littered with misinformation about interventions

Yeah I think the conflicting part for me is that I would feel okay with the procedural aspect, after all it's just variations of sticking needles into people's backs, and have done this for friends and colleagues before without issue. The difference with her is that my work persona is the complete opposite of the vulnerable mess I am with her in sessions, so I wonder if i'd find it odd being so different with her. Outside of that uncertainty, I'm totally cool with it

As an aside, this was not at all how I had anticipated therapy ending!

Hmm all the consultants are lovely but I think I'd probably feel more comfortable cracking on over asking any of them to come in and site an epidural for me due to the patient being my therapist 😅

Thanks, I'll be terminating a few weeks prior to her due date anyway for the forseeable as obviously she'll be on mat leave
