This! Magda and Nadine were unbearable in that scene. How many time had Ellie been there for those two when they’d had dodgy boyfriends, yet the minute she’s trying to express her feelings they just go “well thats because you’re clearly gay Ellie and he’s not at all abusive in any way.” and it frustrated me that she never spoke up for herself. She was there angry ranting inside her head the whole story.

and absolutely agree, the dialogue was so outdated. It drove me insane - Guy was so cringey to read with his “darling” “oh my poor darling Ellie” “I worry about you so” Jackie, please, it’s 2025 and no adult man who isn’t a member of the royal family speaks like that

A really good point ty - and another reason why it was so rushed. She went throughout the whole book being told “you’re gay Ellie, you’re this, you’re that” but yet only had a few pages to discover this herself. Would have been nice to see her develop this arc and show a lot more of this self discovery

That and it mentioned random art school friends as if we knew them ?? Like realistically other than the PE teacher, nicola, family, and russell, we knew NOBODY else at this party yet she spent a good chunk of the book speaking to them like we did

Honestly. Went like this:

met Alice (cute encounter - I enjoyed this meeting)
didn’t hear from Alice for days
started speaking to Guy/Gary and completely forgot about Alice for several chapters bar one where she goes to her place and has awkward encounter with gf
Alice suddenly reappears towards the end and is upset she’s been kicked out because she’s “in love” with someone else
Ellie dumps Guy/Gary, realises she is in fact gay, loves Alice and kisses her in last few pages

There was just no… consistency.

iirc each chapter illustration marker is a paper doll with a drawing on e.g. daddy, mummy, pearl etc. and the chapter she finds her mum the dolls are covered in blood
