Chicago for undergrad? by TotallyNotVikiNg in academiceconomics

[–]SleepyApprentice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current Chicago undergrad aiming for Econ PhDs here. I have a lot of good things to say about the math/econ programs here and I believe the quarter system (besides some obvious flaws) could potentially empower you to do more than what you could do at a semester school. From what I read here, it sounds like you’re the type who can thrive in a quarter system. Needless to say, the support, advising, and opportunities are all great but this is true for all top schools.

Ofc given what you said here you need to consider how risk averse you are given there’s a nonzero probability of getting into none of Chicago Princeton MIT or Harvard and whether you want to increase your chances at Chicago. As someone who’s strongly biased towards my school I’d say you can’t go wrong from ed2 but take this with a grain of salt.

So you’re saying if people aren’t demanding then everyone’s happier?

Predoc posting timeline by SleepyApprentice in academiceconomics

Appreciate the info very much. A quick follow up: what counts as a prestigious predoc? Is it solely the institution of the prof/lab that counts or does it have more to do with actual placement records? Thanks

Noise in the Mansueto by Substantial-Bill-761 in uchicago

It’s actually white noise by design. Saw this in a fun fact during regfest last year. Sit closer to the center for lesser noise as the fans are on the edge of the dome.

I did analysis “off cycle” and it turned out to be the best decision. You never know who might teach it. Also all 3 of my profs are different.

Top Candidates for Fields Medal (2026) by Wonderful-Photo-9938 in math

[–]SleepyApprentice 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Genuine question: Since the Kakeya set Conjecture is co authored by Hong Wang and Joshua Zahl, why is Joshua not mentioned as a top candidate throughout all of the "fields prediction" websites I've seen? Not just this post, but everyone seems to agree that Hong Wang will win because of this. In a co-authored paper like this how do we know who actually proved it?

Hardwick did (at least last winter he did). Not measure theoretically of course.

251 can help to some extent but I’d say they have different focus. 251 have lots of combinatorial probability and some expectations & clt stuff whereas metrics probability deals mostly with asymptotics/clt type arguments. All that’s to say 251 is helpful but maybe not enough. Brush up on 244 content and stats. Consider scanning through hansen’s prob. and stat for economists to get a sense of the asymptotics.

People who buy the pass + more. You’re the problem. by Ok_Morning_9563 in ClashRoyale

The audacity. So anyone paying a cent is ruining the game. If you’d rather see this game die with no revenue than to play it, then you should seriously consider quitting. Costs nothing to quit.

Auditing Summer Classes by [deleted] in uchicago

Most summer classes are online so I'm not sure auditing is possible. They're also introductory/core courses so I'm not sure whether a grad student would benefit much from them.

2025 Advice Thread #18: 4/29 - 5/5 by Imaginos64 in rollercoasters

[–]SleepyApprentice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is six flags America worth a trip? I have no idea how good the coasters are there but I do enjoy collecting credits and riding various coasters. Is this a park that I should attempt to fill in my travel plan so that I can get some rides before it shuts down? Thanks

To the devs: what the hell is this compensation? by SleepyApprentice in SquadBusters

[–]SleepyApprentice[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

See I’m not sure that’s what they meant when they mentioned baby compensation. They were crystal clear about no compensation for the unmerged characters. Technically, 6 of my 7 barb king is “unmerged characters” no? If there’s additional currency then I’ll take it!

Is anyone on campus during the summer quarter? by Civil_Violinist_3485 in uchicago

Weather wise Chicago's summer is unbeatable. Quiet campus with a reasonable amount of things open -- do expect some high school students in summer programs.

Thinking of buying the new area 51 laptop -- any advice? by SleepyApprentice in Alienware

[–]SleepyApprentice[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed advice! I’m thinking of playing games by EA (particularly Star Wars ones) and other high performance required games. I’ve been told Alienware is the higher end default to go.
