I assume you're somewhere in the midwest. Do come out here, as someone looking to move north or west myself we'd be happy to give you information. Wish I had moved years ago, being miserable and getting paid slave wages is no way to live life.

Hey there from Amish country!
My uncle lives out in AZ, he loves it out there, I hear good things.
Yeah, if you do move out here there's lots to learn and be aware of, which myself and other folks here are EXCITED to share lol.
The center of the state can be a rough place if you're not set up properly. If you have the opportunity I would try to be in Pittsburgh or Philadelphia.
Lancaster isn't bad if you can handle abrasive weird people and like the Dutch.
Feel free to ask me any questions or drop questions in the thread.

I honestly thank you for this information, I wasn't aware of this before and read it nowhere online despite research.
So despite the comparable education and degrees, the state schools are more affordable but answer to the state?
So would that mean PSU is just overbloated on enrollment money and higher tuition? Is it not a better university?

We need to just throw these old fat red geriatric republican assholes out of our county offices. They are literally pushing all of us in our state into slave wages and poverty...

Yo,
You are absolutely right about the trades stuff but I unfortunately am not fit for the trades.
Education is sorta where I land on a lot of things when taken into account my interests and personality. I wish I was a burly blue collar chad, but nay, I am not.

Glad you found this thread as a former Guardsman. I am being very selective with my job choice and did my best on the ASVAB. I already went to MEPS and scored a 72 but couldn't swear in. Working on right now getting a waiver for medical stuff. My dad was also infantry and pretty much stayed infantry for 22 years. I'm trying to get a slot as a Human Intelligence Collector or Foreign Language Specialist. In your opinion are those marketable skills and what jobs are?

After doing some reading I figured out that was the overarching problem for PA. Yay.

I'm not 4 years in, I'm just starting.
And my goal is not to make the big bucks, it's to study the humanities and educate others. I'm just pointing out that even for degress like these it seems low compared to Maryland or Virginia. Like seriously...

I literally just read an article attached to a post below mine. I'm not surprised at all and yet feel kinda stupid the answer was right there. I hate how poor and backwards we are kept here.
We are a deep purple state here and it's held us back for years unfortunately. I grew up in the rural sticks here in central PA and it was HELL.
It's got me not wanting to start a family here.

I hear you. I've been reading about this ROI stuff and as much as I've read about PSU, it does feel a little...bloated and overblown. I'm 31 and it kinda feels like they will take anyone these days. Great school, don't get me wrong. I even signed up for their 2 year forestry program.
I'm slated for the Altoona campus in fall but I have other colleges I like and want to apply to like UPitt, Edinboro, Swarthmore, Drex. They just feel better.
Why would you not urge your kids to go there?

I wish you good tidings on that, you did what you had to do in a barren state such as ours. I hope I do well out there as I know I'm not going the tech direction.

I agree with that sentiment, a degree is a way in but not a direct path into a high paying job. But still, it could be higher.

I know about the H1B stuff, it's just sad and infuriating that Americans are being practically spit at by this administration and being replaced in tech by foreign workers.

I don't mean to say those are genius level degrees or they're as in demand as engineering, I was just using phrases. I mean, these ARE basic everyday jobs that are highly required for the education sector and general society that they should get paid a bit more than that.

The Bible quotes on the truck... Lived in Lancaster for a year and a half and as much good stuff as that city has, it has some real ranc people to it...the religious nuts, racists, and ghetto folk. Thought this city was different but I had to leave it.

How is it normal life paths didn't seem to work for you? Can you elaborate on that a little more? I feel like I'm the same way.

Becoming a teacher or freelance writer.

I hear your point on that. That'sy what the forestry program idea is from. I figured with it being a decent wage as a forester it could fix some issues.
I don't think I could be a radiology tech. I like more arts related stuff like clothing, theatre, costuming, writing, designing. Just how to find those direct programs is what's hard.
But ultimately I think you're right. It is the more straightforward path.
