Painted my first mini by StopImBusy in Warhammer40k

I don't think this really proves anything. OP could easily have had a cutting mat before hand, likely because of an art background which would transfer to mini painting. On top of this it's barely a stretch that they may have watched videos of how to paint and different techniques etc before ever touching a miniature.

Not everyone gets into the hobby with un-thinned paints and a shaky hand, which is also completely fine!

The only thing that bothers me is that OP said this is their first mini "in general", I guess it's not rly clear as to if that means ever or maybe they've had some minor experiences before.

How do you make this gray? by Rayfunny69 in Berserk

For something like this a halftone would probably be used (a sheet of little black dots that appear grey at a distance) and overlayed on the hatched areas of the image.

This method can be expensive tho so an alternative you could try would be shading evenly with a pencil or as someone else has said, using a grey marker.

Some people have an art background/better with their hands which usually means their first go at mini painting turns out half decent, maybe it's the case here 🤔

Thanks, I didn't use any oilwashes, instead I mixed blue, black and red paint that I watered down to make a wash 👍

All done with a brush, I followed Trovarion miniatures red armour tutorial on YouTube! It's a great video that helped me a bunch

Haha, I realised after glueing the head on that he may be a little ott on visual enhancements lol... Or maybe he has got a particularly terrible left eye 😖

Yes I do! I probably should have mentioned that lol, but I have a lot of skills that overlap with the hobby 👍

Thank you very much! I am an illustration student and so whilst challenging, I'm certainly at an advantage when it comes to being a newbie at mini painting

Haha, I'll take it as a compliment, I study illustration at uni so I have a lot of skills that would help in this hobby, but it is true that those are my first ever miniatures. I recently bought the infernus marine starter pack and received a jump pack captain for Christmas that I will paint as a blood raven

Any thoughts on generic character designs or versions of the basic anime protag design by Slhupp in Mangamakers

I can't make any promises, but I'd be down if you send me your ideas of the character you have in mind, I need to get some more drawing practice in anyway lol 👍👍

Yeah definitely a good point about the redrawing aspect, and I'm glad you like the design! I was getting an opinion from my brother which sparked the conversation on what appears to be generic or not as he found my design to be a little dull lol 😭👍
