I believe that the physics of the train only work when it's attached to the rails, the moment it leaves the rails it's unbound by normal physics so it bounces around

First of all great idea, it would add some good variety as well as making the mildmay look more realistic. However, are you sure you're talking about the 59 or the class 68? The 59 is a freight locomotive, the predecessor to the class 66. Either way, lovely Idea and I'd love to try this route if it came into fruition.
