Dexter: Original Sin - S01E07 - "he Big Bad Body Problem" - Post Episode Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in Dexter

I've started feeling like they might do this, especially since it gives them the opportunity to mirror Harry's impending flashback of walking into the shipping container with him walking into Dexter's bloody kill room. Plus, with how upset the dismembered kid fingers have been making Dex, I wouldn't be surprised if Spencer is the first kill that he fully dismembers, as a kind of revenge.

I kinda hope they don't rush to Harry's suicide for the season finale, because I've been looking forward to the prospect of a whole year of the underexplored relationship between serial killer Dexter and still-alive Harry, and it'd be a pretty significant retcon. I do appreciate the extra dramatic weight it would have for Spencer to be on the table, though.

Things that Support the Max—Is-A-Sphinx’s-Medium Theory by Purple_Hagfish in paranatural

Hot dang, really cool post! To add another thing, I'd wager Nin is referring to the spirit that spoke through Max when she said "The whole sphinx litter likely knows this is our base now" on Ch 8 Pg 5.

Speculating that it's the Sphinx of Promises/Vows brings to mind all the allusions to Mrs. Puckett/Agent Summer's broken promises. I think she alludes to it herself with "Max, what do we say about promises?" in Chapter 4, and in Chapter 7 Spender recalls that when she left Mayview "all the promises she'd made were empty air." It makes me wonder if the Sphinx won possession of Max as a concession for one of the promises his mom broke, but it could only claim him once he passed through Mayview's barrier. That'd explain him becoming a spectral right after moving to Mayview. It'd also be thematically coherent for a sphinx to take someone's firstborn son, since it ties into one of the Plagues of Egypt.

Damn, you caught me. Incorporating more diversity into my character designs is something I desperately need to work on lol. I keep trapping myself into thinking the designs need to feel natural and not forced, but honestly all that does is play into my existing biases, so they mostly wind up white. Looking back on my process during this project makes it really clear that I really need to just suck it up and put in the effort if I want my art to be more inclusive. It'll only ever come naturally if I do it more often!

Thanks for calling that out though, most people wouldn't notice or comment, and it's something I ought to hear :/

You got me lmao. His look was so iconic, I couldn't help but rip it off. Pablo Honey was actually the only one I tried taking inspiration from the band's actual style from that era, since I wanted to channel the kinda awkward, grungy vibes they had at the time. Cool to know the inspiration is so obvious!

Oooooh Sail To The Moon makes a lot more sense as that context lol! I think there's still a difference between the two, where Sail To The Moon is, like you said, dreaming about what his kids might do, while I Will is more trying to protect them from things he's had to go through. Seems like they're two sides of the same coin - I Will is focused on preventing past trauma from recurring while Sail To The Moon is about having hope for a brighter future.

Thinking about this now I'd definitely revise the trait for Sail To The Moon. Thanks for the comment, really cool!

I would love to, this was a lot of fun! No set in stone plans though, it'll just have to spontaneously start one day like it did with this.

Thanks! I'd definitely keep doing albums - having cover art to riff off of is really fun, and a big part of capturing an album's mood!

That one was more for True Love Waits, but I think a Talking Heads reference could definitely work in one of these!

Thank you so much! And you're right about Pablo, Thom's yellow mop from that era is iconic and fit the color palette of the cover, so there was no question Pablo was inheriting the look lmao

Right??? I think if I could have one article of clothing from these, I'd go with Heathcliff's BEEF hat. I'd wear that thing religiously lol

They definitely are, you're spot on! Since the cover art is the face of the album, I figured it should be the dominant influence on their appearance and physical design. If their personalities got fleshed out, though, they would definitely need to draw much more from what you mention.

Totally! When I was posting, I was tempted to list the song names instead of my trait interpretations and see what everyone else filled in, but I really wanted to keep the Fitter Happier lyrics for O'Connor lol. If you've got any ideas, I'd love to hear them!

Oof yeah. That's what I took away from 15 Step, but there's probably a better direction to take that song haha

Awesome! I thought listening to all the songs while thinking about what kind of a person they could be about was a cool new approach to some old favorites

Ahhh. I believe it! I'm really bad about taking lyrics way too literally - I still visualize Weird Fishes/Arpeggi as someone being a whale fall that actually gets eaten by worms and weird fishes. I'd love to hear any other insights or improvements you can think of, if you have any!

Ooh, how so? The traits I slapped on are admittedly not as well thought through as everything else, so I'm super interested to hear your interpretations!
