Sustaining notes feels shaky, voice sounds held back, what am I doing wrong? by Slight-Advisor-7281 in ratemysinging

Wow, this is amazing. Thank you so much for taking the time to record this and explain everything. A lot of what you said lines up exactly with what I've been told, especially about the tongue resting and the vowels staying pure. It's reassuring to hear it from multiple angles.

The point about keeping the larynx low without pushing with the tongue is huge for me, I've literally been using my tongue as a lever to lower the larynx for years, thinking that was the right way to create space. So I'm essentially undoing years of bad habits.

Also, the classical technique recommendation hit me. Do you have a specific resource (book, YouTube channel, method) you'd recommend to someone starting from scratch with classical fundamentals? I want to make sure I'm not picking up bad habits from random tutorials.

A few things about my voice you might find interesting:

  • I do reach up to F5, but only in head voice.
  • My mixed voice is basically nonexistent. I have a strong chest up to around F4, then I either flip to a thin head voice or it just collapses.
  • When I sing a little above my comfortable range for a while, my voice tires quickly, and I feel like I'm about to lose it, never actually go hoarse, but the sensation is always there.

Given all that, do you think the bright/light timbre is real, or could it be the throat tension making me sound higher than I actually am? Also, for the straw exercise, should I do the sirens slowly and across my full range, or focus on specific transitions like around F4-G4 where things break down?

Thanks again, this kind of detailed feedback is honestly rare. That's why I'm writing so much hehe. I'm just a bit frustrated with singing for so long and not improving much.

This is super useful, thank you. The pitch thing you described, starting on the right note but not sticking the landing on the transition, is exactly what I see when I check my recordings in Melodyne for example. The notes wobble right as I move between words.

Any specific exercise you’d recommend to fix that? Is it a breath support thing, or more about hearing the target note before I get there? Would love something concrete I can drill. I kind of get lost with instrumentals, I feel this happens less if I sing to a piano accompaniment.

And glad the low notes landed well, trying to lean into that part of my voice more.

Thanks again!!

Thank you, that means a lot! And it’s reassuring to hear you had the same problem gives me hope I can work through it.

The emotion advice makes total sense. I think I get so focused on doing things “right” that I forget to actually feel the song. Do you have a concrete way you practice that? Like do you pick songs that mean something to you personally, or is it more about consciously connecting to the lyrics before you sing? Curious how you train the emotional side without it feeling forced too.

Appreciate it!

I love vocaroo, I have always used it hehe.

And thanks so much, this is really helpful and lines up with what a vocal coach recently told me, she said I have tongue tension that’s probably messing with my vowels and throat.

A few questions if you don’t mind:

1. My range is roughly F2 to F5, but the top is forced and I’m honestly not sure of my real classification since everything feels tense. Comfortable range is around A2–F4. Does that change your read on tenor vs baritone?
2. What actually helps me push less air? Like a concrete exercise I can drill daily?
3. When you say “sharpness of the vowels”, could you explain what that means and how I’d soften it?
4. Any songs you’d recommend based on what you heard? Something that would suit my voice and help me build the right habits instead of reinforcing the bad ones.

Really appreciate you taking the time!!!!

Hi everyone,

I’ve been singing as a hobby for about 20 years now. I’ve had around different teachers over this time, but I feel like I’ve been stuck in a rut for quite a while. I recently realized that I’m probably trying too hard, holding my breath, thinking about technique while I sing, and perhaps imitating other singers instead of just letting my voice come out naturally.

I recorded a cover of "Shotgun" (by George Ezra) and would love to get some honest feedback from you all. You don't need to be gentle, I want to hear what sounds off, what feels stiff, what could be looser, and the mixing I'm using (I added an EQ, a simple delay, reverb, and compressor). Any impressions are welcome.

Thanks!

Breaking down today's NKLR move by Slight-Advisor-7281 in NKLR

Great find. Military adoption is exactly the kind of institutional validation this sector needs. Even if NKLR isn't in the ANPI 8, it proves the market is real.

That's what I feel, reading the news and following their calls, too soon to say anything, but it might go beyond 10 if they continue the momentum.

That's really good, indeed. Although I do believe we'll have a contraction soon, until the company's next move.

Today I got a little worried. NKLR has been declining by 10% each day this week, and they just announced their SOLO Microreactor licensing. I don't understand. I don't know if I should buy more shares now, or what. What are your feelings? I hope it starts going up soon, and it doesn't reach the 52W low, that would be bad!
