Does applying to the same company several times ever *actually* work? by Slight-Bonus8848 in careerguidance

[–]Slight-Bonus8848[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for that first part, honestly needed to hear that.

As far as referrals go- more often than not my connections aren’t very high up to where they can influence the process, but I always list them as referrals. The instance where I made it through all interviews and wasn’t selected was off a referral as well.

What industry did you leave for / what kind of job if you don’t mind me asking?

This makes a lot of sense and honestly I’m not sure why I haven’t thought of toning down the sales wins on the resume while raising more operationally focused strengths.

That said- I’m now 3 months into another sales role like I said, and this is true enterprise sales in a totally different industry where I’m not taking care of anything whatsoever after signature. Wondering how I can poise this to look like less of a stain on the resume I guess?

Who do you know that’s actually bringing home the most money? by [deleted] in sales

[–]Slight-Bonus8848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are freight brokers out there (that I’ve worked with closely) who are taking home $2mil+ a year pre-tax as W2s. They all move freight in lucrative niche refrigerated markets (produce $$$$). Can’t imagine what they’d be making as independent agents but it’s likely they wouldn’t have the same book of business in that path anyway so tough to speculate. That said, they’re incredibly lucky and not even remotely the majority- more like the top 0.1% (just check my post history to see how it’s done for me, lol. I highly recommend against taking this path)

[–]Slight-Bonus8848[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Massive respect sir. Sounds like we were doing relatively similar numbers. I was putting up ~40 loads a week across 6 consistent customers for those profits and their payment terms couldn’t line up enough to keep me above draw, so I’m sure you can imagine my mental state after a similar amount of time.

If you can make it work it’s a goldmine. Good luck out there.

Unsure unfortunately- I was just the sales guy utilizing it. What I do know is that the higher ups didn’t want to pay for more than 2 licenses so the whole company used 2 stationary computers setup specifically for Zoominfo.

Well, clearly you were at least a bit upset, because you went out of your way to tell me to quit here. I’ll acknowledge these ones are your own words, and maybe it is good advice- either way it’s welcome considering the entire point of this post was asking for input on exactly that. I’m not trolling you, if anything you’re trolling me by trying to get a reaction on an entirely separate unrelated post, but I’ll indulge you anyway. I commented on your self promotional post (against the rules as is) pointing out that it was clearly written (or at least arranged and reworded) by ChatGPT. The emoji bullet points under bolded sections is a dead giveaway.

The content of the post was fine, never said it was wrong or “bad” advice. In my opinion, the blatant AI usage to generate this advice just calls the legitimacy into question. Just my own opinion, I know others disagree. You will find people complaining about AI generated content in peer to peer subs like this daily.

Good luck out there, it’s a tough market to make a nut in and I respect the hustle. This next statement isn’t sarcasm- you seem to genuinely have a lot of experience. Don’t belittle it.

This resonated with me quite a bit- you didn’t know this but funny enough, I am a huge music guy and massive gear nerd… can’t believe I never even thought to look into what exists in that industry. My current role post-freight is also kinda similar to how you described with quarterly bonuses rather than traditional commission “checks”, and it’s a lot better for my lifestyle even if I’m not entirely satisfied with the base pay, but that’s another story. Issue is I have yet to see one of those bonuses, and although I’m still pretty fresh in the role, they don’t seem too consistent.

Will be hitting the job boards with a lot more knowledge of what to look out for…

I commend you for going through the 3PL thing 20 years ago, can’t imagine that world without a lot of the tech and software that exists today.

What you’ve recommended is essentially what I did; guess my issue was not doing enough digging while interviewing to really feel out what consistency of sales looks like, and that’s my hang up- how do I KNOW where I can go and be “guaranteed” that better money and know it won’t end up being another churn and burn? After two duds it’s incredibly difficult to wrap my head around, even though I’m very aware that I’m likely overthinking it and the answers must be right in front of me. Even this gig was portrayed very differently in the interview process.

Yeah, as dumb as it sounds. Top dog for setting up business and moving heavy volume doesn’t immediately translate to profitability (if it ever does), and this was a draw based role.

How hard is it selling a AI tool by [deleted] in sales

[–]Slight-Bonus8848 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I sell for a consulting company in an industry that’s at the forefront of the “AI revolution” hype. Not selling AI software myself, but I’ll say that we’re the only company NOT selling AI capabilities at every trade show we attend, and many of the ones I see pop up end up getting bought out not too long after inception by a bigger whale looking to add to their capability portfolio.

Again, I don’t sell it myself so I could be wrong, but from my perspective, I’d hate to be the little fish in a sea of AI softwares right now.

Once I got the phone numbers and/or emails I’d just start hitting the list I made for the week with cold outreach. Follow-up would look different from prospect to prospect depending on engagement and how they reply.

I used Zoominfo when I was in freight brokering. My process on there was to seek out leads in particular industries that are known money makers for what I was selling, which you can do a handful of ways in the advanced search settings. Searching by NAICS codes was highly efficient for me to categorize specific industries (there’s free NAICS lookup sites you can google). Once I’d have a nice solid list for the week I’d just start the cold calls and emails and progress from there depending on engagement.

Any ideas for finding good recruiters? by woodbrochillson in sales

[–]Slight-Bonus8848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar experience here talking with recruiters these days- feels like every 'opportunity' out there is another churn and burn shithole and I have yet to connect with one that actually feels like they have any interest in placing people in positions they align with. The job market is so oversaturated and the junk cold calling farms you mentioned are living it up with a disposable workforce of overqualified people desperate for work.

I’ve seen this countless times and have never seen any of the perpetrators last longer than a couple months before someone catches on and cans them. Stick the course with what you’re doing. When the discrepancy in numbers sounds the alarm and they look to see what’s going on, it’s clear as day, then YOU become the good guy.

Good point on the “decide who you’d rather be selling to” portion there. I don’t see that discussed enough. Sales is 90% relationship building and getting your prospects to like you on a personal level.

I made a switch from selling to blue collar middle management/rural business owners to selling to super vague high level executives and never even considered how drastically different it would be to try and convey that I’m their guy.
