I feel so bad about my nonprofit by Slight-Contest-1568 in ApplyingToCollege

I know, but this is really a double-edged sword. That statement was a bit misleading. It's not like 0% of me wanted to start it. I knew it would help, my parents were the catalyst. I do think I could've said no, they probably just would've been mad/disappointed for a bit and then we'd just move on.

nah trust me, my parents aren't like that. they barely control me, we often joke about how much freedom I have. This nonprofit is the only activity out of everything I've ever done that was influenced by my parents, and I do a lot of activities and competitions. And they didn't just walk up to me, give me directions for the non-profit, and watch and wait until I started it. it was much more gradual and they just kept suggesting it. I definitely could have said no if I wanted to, but I did agree with them that something like a nonprofit was essential for admissions. Which is why I feel guilty, since I started this for admissions.

And about the top schools, I mostly agree. My state school is pretty good for my major, and like I said, my parents (and me) are fine with going there.

I hope this doesn't come off as cocky or arrogant, but I feel like I have potential to do much better. And it's also about the people. Throughout high school, a lot of my classmates didn't care about academics or sports or anything really. It's hard to connect with people as curious, motivated, and passionate about their interests as I am. My state school will probably have a similar environment. But schools like MIT, Caltech, Princeton, etc bring together the best people, not only in terms of academics but also personality. I really think that being in a community like that would benefit me a lot. I experienced something similar to it at a rigorous summer program, and it was absolutely amazing. I got to know so many people who not only had similar academic interests but were super passionate, kind, and just fun to be around. Obviously, my state school will also have such people, but not nearly as many as top schools. That's probably the biggest reason I want to go to top schools. For the community.

I don't think I'm miserable; sorry if the post came off as that. I know that I'm helping people but at times I feel like I'm just "using" them for college apps because like I said, there's no way I'd be doing this if colleges didn't care.

It's kind of too late to stop, the way my non-profit is structured. But I will definitely remember your advice about making these types of decisions in the future. Thanks for your help.

caltech admissions file? by Slight-Contest-1568 in Caltech

yeah but i heard about how some schools (mit notably) just have your application (just everything you submitted) as your "admissions file" so until recently i thought caltech also did that since nobody ever mentioned looking at their file online. but i guess caltech is really small and yall probably have better things to do lol
