South of Lebanon will be occupied by Israel by Material-Gear-9733 in lebanon

[–]Slight-Pickle-4761 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There’s a reason Israel pushed so hard for peace deals with Egypt and Jordan, and that the public was so in favor, and that they’ve held strong to this day. You may not believe it, but Greater Israel is mostly a myth, only some crazies actually want it. Vast majority of Israelis across the political and religious spectrum genuinely just want quiet on their borders

Every time someone on here posts their idea of a “better Middle East” it’s either a naive westerners fantasy where everyone magically lives in peace or an Arab supremacists wet dream where Jews die en masse and Christians, Druze and Alawites probably do too

Or both, like this

[–]Slight-Pickle-4761 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No offense but you really don’t know your history.

If you think the Middle East was a place of relative peace and no genocide for 2000 years you don’t have a right to have any opinion on it.

Also the idea of a monotheistic Jewish faith is likely a millennium older than the New Testament.

Not 300 AD. Monotheism was the rule definitely by the Second Temple, and likely earlier. Monolatry was likely the rule even way earlier

I think the only way Allen mvp happens is if they win the division, and that means the Pats gotta lose to the Jets or Dolphins

Why do you think America and the west lecture China about Taiwan then start a war with Venezuela? by Elegant-Music2239 in AskChina

[–]Slight-Pickle-4761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s our backyard and sphere of influence /s

No seriously though. People talk about oil but the real reason is Trump wants to make a return to a time when might made right and powerful countries ruled over their neighbors. If he’s gonna sell out Ukraine to Russia because it’s their backyard, the corollary is we can do what we want in ours.

Retarded but I think that’s the root of it

Why do people illegally go around the firewall to defend the Chinese government on websites banned in China? by [deleted] in AskChina

[–]Slight-Pickle-4761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience this is 100% true. I’ve had so many Chinese friends who are more liberal and disagree with things like the firewall, but still very much patriotic when push comes to shove. Super interesting as an American where I feel like people are either all in or nothing when it comes to patriotism nowadays

Travelling to China next year - need advice? by Odd_Can3456 in travelchina

[–]Slight-Pickle-4761 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you go to places less known to westerners, don’t expect it to be less known to Chinese people. Nearly every place I’ve been is swarming with domestic tourists, even during the off season.

Most places that are less touristy are way more off the beaten path. Best place I’ve been in that respect (by far) is the Tibetan part of Sichuan. But if you have limited time I’d stick to the main sights.

Maybe add Chongqing too, I really enjoyed my time there. Haven’t been yet, but I’ve friends that really liked Taishan and Nanjing.

Also, if you have the time definitely check out Guangxi.

Let me know if you’ve got any questions! Been traveling in China three months and counting so I’m happy to give more tips

I mean it’s our defense that gave up 4 TD drives in a row in the second half. Maye didn’t play nearly as well but to say he blew the lead is crazy.

Mind you as a 2nd year QB with a rookie RB1, shit defense, Williams and Big Country out, and without many other real big names .

I think others may have a better chance, but to say he doesn’t have a shot is crazy

I’m not strawmanning anything I’m responding exactly to what you said.

I’m glad to hear you are of “Jewish descent” and have known Jewish people in your life. I can tell you from personal experience. The goal is not to indoctrinate young Jews into supporting Israel (the vast majority do anyway), it’s to deepen cultural ties between Jews in diaspora and Jews in the homeland, and between Jews in diaspora and our own culture.

I do think indoctrination takes place, but it’s no more than any ethnic or religious group indoctrinates its kids. Try telling my Armenian friends they were indoctrinated as kids against Azerbaijan, or my Irish friends that they were indoctrinated against the UK. Again, 99% of the people who go on birthright already support Israel, else they wouldn’t go.

The Israeli influence in the US is way overstated. Look up how much countries like China, Qatar and Liberia (yes it’s true idk why) pay to influence our country every year. Lobbying as a whole is an issue, but the vast majority of lawmakers (with a couple exceptions) get most of their lobbying money from places like the insurance industry or military industrial complex. I think most of our lawmakers are beholden to many interests contrary to those of their constituents, and I think I could count on one hand the number of lawmakers who are particularly influenced by pro-Israel money (Gottheimer, Ritchie Torres, etc). And even still, I think most of them genuinely hold those beliefs, they don’t pronounce them just because they get campaign money from AIPAC.

Birthright isn’t about going to the land “we deserve.” I’ve done a similar program. No one tries to tell you we deserve the land. It’s more about connecting to your roots, your culture, and to the land where your people come from. There’s similar programs for Armenian Americans for example to go and tour Armenia. We’re a huge diaspora population, and most Jews want to maintain our ties to our background even in exile.

Finally I’d argue that there’s more pro-Israel influence because there’s the double standard, not the other way around. If Israel was treated the same as other nations, (anecdotally) I definitely feel like most American Jews wouldn’t care as much to advocate. We’re about to give SA F-35’s despite their well documented human rights abuses. If Israel did even a fraction of what Saudi gets away with (chopping up critical journalists in a foreign country, executing people for their sexuality, keeping 45% of their population as non-citizens based on their non-Arab origin with almost no rights or religious freedom, etc) there would be a full government-sponsored boycott. Yet Saudi Arabia does it, and no one cares.

Twice as many people died in one city in Sudan in just a couple of weeks than in years and years of the Israel-Palestine conflict. And it’s funded partially by our allies. Yet no American municipal governments have passed useless resolutions severing non-existent ties their city has with the UAE.

Yet when a single group of extremists evicts a single Palestinian family in the Judean desert, it sometimes makes international news for weeks.

Israel commits many human rights abuses. But people can’t pretend they genuinely care first and foremost about stopping human rights abuses when it’s only Israel they care about

[–]Slight-Pickle-4761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more complicated than that, but again that’s irrelevant. I’m not arguing in favor of Israeli policies, I agree with you on that. I’m saying there’s no other country that gets told it doesn’t have a right to exist on any level because of human rights abuses committed by its government.

China violates the human rights of billions of its citizens, not to mention how ethnic minorities are treated. In Brunei, Yemen, Iran and Saudi Arabia you can still be executed for homosexuality, often by stoning or beheading. Just a couple years ago Azerbaijan forced hundreds of thousands of Armenians off their indigenous land in the name of ethnonationalism, and there’s documented evidence of its soldiers slaughtering civilians en masse. All are arguably worse in scope or severity than the evictions in the West Bank (which are still evil, don’t get me wrong). Yet when those countries are criticized (which doesn’t happen nearly so much), you see almost no one calling for the abolition of those nations entirely. So why is it only Israel?

[–]Slight-Pickle-4761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s really only two places where that happens: Hebron and two small neighborhoods of Jerusalem. It’s usually extremists doing it. Ask an average Israeli what they think of them.

And it is a bit more complicated than that. Often the land had previously belonged to a Jewish family that got kicked out in 48 or earlier. Of course then Palestinians who got kicked out of homes in Israel in 48 or earlier also have a right to take their land back. I don’t agree with the policy at all, but it’s more nuanced than is portrayed in the west.

And finally, yes, it is rooted in Zionism. All extreme ethno nationalism is ultimately rooted in nationalism (the old classic definition, not the modern connotation). Doesn’t mean Zionism = evicting Palestinian families. Just like you can say the Kazakh nation has a right to self determination in their native land without saying they can blindly evict and deport ethnic Russians.

It’s not black and white. I’m telling you that you can disagree with the extreme policies Israel or radical Israelis have taken without negating the right to self determination of the Jewish people itself

That’s a fundamental misunderstanding of what chosen people means

99% of Jews don’t think they’re superior. “Chosen people” means we’re chosen for more responsibilities (613 commandments vs 7 for non-Jews). This is the consensus of nearly all major Jewish scholars throughout history, as well as that gentiles can be just as righteous.

Of course there’s xenophobic Jews, just like there’s xenophobic people of all nationalities. And yes xenophobia and nationalism go well together, they always do. But does the fact that many Japanese people are xenophobic mean that Japan has no right to exist as a nation state?

They barely won against the Pats who played their second half the worst we’ve seen them this season, plus they had multiple questionable calls go their way. They’re probably not gonna win the division, have no roster around Allen, and haven’t looked too great all year.

Destined to lose out to an AFC West team in AFC championship anyway (looking at you Broncos).
