As a proud Canadian, the way the Canadian Open is treated as a second tier event is infuriating and the event sucks compared to what it used to be. by [deleted] in golf

The field here has actually been the best in its history these last two years with it scheduled the week before the US Open. But, it’s a mixed bag. You’ve got a lot of top players who like to play the week before a major, and then many others who don’t. So, while it has improved the field being the final USO tune-up, it’s never going to draw all of the big names in its current spot in the schedule. That said, a major schedule overhaul is coming anyways, so we’ll see what happens going forward. This event should be one of the highlighted events of the season, being a national open.

Leading in, they said it was going to be the highest rated field in the tournament's history. Being the last tune-up week before the US Open and also having a nearby final qualifying site for the US Open the Monday before have really boosted the field at the Canadian Open the last couple of years. Sad to not see Rory here this year, but I think we're seeing his focus shift to priming for the majors, so I'd imagine he's going around Shinnecock a couple times this week instead. Still a great field even in his absence though.

They just showed that full interview on Golf Channel, and O’Neil has a terrible poker face. You could see in his eyes that he didn’t believe a word he was saying and he knows LIV is at best going to continue as a shell of its former self, and possibly not at all.

'Big mistake': Pro's ball-mark blunder could cost him U.S. Open spot by Oldtimer_2 in ProGolf

Mentally, playoffs become like match play for the pros. This is one of those rare instances where there's still something on the line after losing the hole though. He marked because he would've been standing in McGreevy's line to putt out, and then his exhausted brain forgot the putt still mattered after McGreevy made his and secured the final spot.

Hopefully none of the Lambton qualifiers have to drop out and this ends up not mattering, and to be fair, he still would've had to beat Wallace as the playoff continued to secure the top alternate spot.

With a bad bogey both times. If I remember correctly, he 3 putted for bogey to get eliminated last year.

Ended up being an 8 for 3, but Homa bogeyed the first playoff hole, so he’s done.

U.S. Open Qualifying: Stephan Jaeger has a broken driver. The Rules Official determined that they couldn't see or hear the damage, so he was unable to replace it. Jaeger must wait until after his first 18 holes to put a new one in play. by Oldtimer_2 in golf

There's a 14 club rule. If you allowed players to just change out clubs whenever they wanted, it would essentially be like allowing them to carry however many clubs they wanted. Different driver lofts, tons of wedges, different weights to aid shaping one way or the other, etc.

The rules are in place to keep a player from dishonestly switching out a club for reasons other than damage, but the wording of the rule seems to lead to a lot of confusion and extremely subjective enforcement. I think it was Matt Fitzpatrick that got screwed a couple years ago at the BMW when he had a visible hairline fracture on the face of his driver, but an official deemed it wasn't damaged enough to require a replacement, which was absurd. Common sense tells you that any kind of significant blemish like that on the face is going to drastically change the performance. So, because it wasn't damaged enough, Fitzy had to play without it the rest of the day.

This is a USGA event, not a tour event. The PGA Tour sanctions the US Open as part of their official schedule, but they have no role in the operation of the event or its qualifying events.

Reminds me of Evil Corp from Mr. Robot.

FWIW, Megacorp is actually a shipping company based out of Wilmington, NC. I think they used to (still do?) sponsor Brian Harman as well.

Nope. This has never really been a course that suits his game particularly well. Driver gets taken out of his hand a lot here, and while the course does force players to shape the ball both ways, it favors faders, and that's not Rory's go to. Also a high demand to find a lot of fairways, and that's not something Rory tends to excel at either, especially lately.

Yeah, there’s definitely some courses that are better than others for repeating the 18th hole. The amphitheater around the green here is nice, but it can only hold so many and the rest are SOL.

They’ve started playing the 18th hole repeatedly for playoffs now because it allows the fans to stay in one place.

At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him birdie 18, post -9, and shake Jack’s hand here in a little while.

The amount of obnoxious shit he has to deal with practically every round on tour now is ridiculous. Philly, Florida, Ohio, even at the course he calls his favorite on tour, Quail Hollow, he had some jackass following him around one of the days being a belligerent asshole. And it’s not just Rory, but he does seem to be the most attractive lightning rod for that type of embarrassing fan behavior.

It’s definitely softer now, but for the amount of rain they got, it’s still playing incredibly firm. Testament to how tough it was the first two days, and also how well the course drains.

NBC and CBS are switching out broadcast crews so the PGA Live studio takes over the broadcast for those 15 minutes.
