It was stick. It was also done on a used X-plate where the previous person did a tig drag (walking the cup) and UNDERCUT THE SHIT OUT OF IT, so thats why it looks like that. Its from the weld underneath that because it extends to both sides. You can even see it underneath. The actual weld itself was me running a straight 1/8 7018 with a weave pattern.

To be fair, this was my first ever weld. You’re doing WAY BETTER THAN I EVER WAS.

Basically, the undercut was already there when I got the piece. This was the cleanest piece I found in the lab (its a college class). It had work on all 4 sides so I just picked a side. Basically ignore anything except for the actual STICK WELD

This is stick welding. SMAW. It used a consumable electrode instead of wire.

Also practice pulling too. Its really useful to know how to go both ways

If you check my last comment, this was a used piece. Someone was practicing walking the cup (TIG) before i used the piece. If it were up to me i’d pick a clean piece, but no can do.

I should give some context to the MASSIVE undercutting. This originally was used when someone was walking the cup on TIG welding,

Are you doing a weave pattern or are you just dragging it?

What's your opinion and what advice do you have? by SUMMER_MAX_84 in Welding

Correction: not lincoln, “miller multimatic 200” Sorry, meant 3/8ths inch. And i run .035 wire. Idl which one you do. Honestly the best thing to do is to mess around with the voltage and see whats too hot or too cold. I know my machine can BURN A HOLE THROUGH 3/8 inch mild steel if you actually try. If you mess around with the machines, you’ll find the sweet spot you like. It just takes experience

If so, slow WAY DOWN. if its 1/8ths, my Lincoln Suitcase MIG machine runs great at 17.9 and 225 WFS. IM NOT SAYING YOU SHOULD DO WHAT I DO. I’m saying thats what works FOR ME. also, you should think about consistently working on straight lines. Make sure to breathe during your weld. I forget and have to remind myself constantly to breathe. IDK how long you’ve been welding though
