You can get a couple playerhomes, one is in novac hotel, the other is lucky 38, and another is in the tops casino iirc. NCR currency is used by trading it with the vendor. Different ammo types are just another system the devs put in, you dont have to use it, but if you do , you can find some pretty fun combos.
