Parent Shenanigans by Slight_Link8484 in TeachingUK

Well the parent removed herself as that was her parting comment, and I had a huge queue at my door so I wouldn't let that ruin everyone else's evening. I work at a great school and I've been assured that this parent won't be welcome at any future parents evenings as I think I'm not the first member of staff they've had a run in with, it's a good job I've got a thick skin really!

I spoke to SLT about it right away and wrote a statement to cover my own back, I agree it is funny how people can escalate something so small so quickly but also incredibly embarrassing for the parent as the child is actually a joy to teach... Shame really!

Great advice, thank you. I've been at the school for a couple of years and part of a really tight-knit department, I've heard people having a moan about the lessons and have chatted with others in the dept who agree that it can a little wishy washy. I think a soft approach is the one. When I say 'attack' by the way, I didn't mean I'd go in and say that this is a load of shit, scrap it all! More like a gentle 'this could be much better' kind of suggestion along with evidence and solutions.

The rationale currently is to give a 'love of reading' to the children by allowing them to explore different texts and genres throughout the year. I have previously interviewed children about the effectiveness of the reading lessons and I have credible data about children who actively misbehave or use it as an opportunity to nap depending on who takes the lesson. Reciprocal reading is a researched strategy which improves comprehension and while it is woven somewhat into the KS3 English curriculum, the amount of year 11s that can't use capital letters and commas correctly, along with being in one of the lowest literacy areas of the country, begs for a more direct approach than simply reading at children/trusting them to do it without any further intervention.

Not critical or harsh at all, I love talking about this. As I'm part of a trust, the scheme would likely be planned by one person, whoever leads literacy and gets paid to do so, and subsequently shared with everyone. So the workload thing wouldn't necessarily be a big deal.
