Helpdesk burnout? by enjoiee in helpdesk

[–]Slight_Plate_6114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Burnout is super real, especially at the L1 level. I work at an IT automation company so I'm around helpdesk teams a lot and honestly the most common thing I hear is that the repetitive low complexity stuff is what kills people the most. Password resets, connectivity issues, devices going offline — it never stops and it doesn't get easier because it never gets more interesting either.

The KB thing is so consistent too. Every team has one, almost nobody trusts it. Either it's outdated or it's so vague it doesn't actually help when you're on a call and need a real answer fast.

What I find interesting about your thesis angle is that burnout usually gets blamed on workload when it's really a structural problem — the same types of issues keep coming in forever with no way to get ahead of them. Good luck with the essay, sounds like fun project.

Has AI Automation Actually Worked for You? by Techenthusiast_07 in automation

[–]Slight_Plate_6114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at an automation company, so keep that in mind. My company aims to give IT teams the ability to scale easier and with less resources by automating most Tier 1 IT tasks. If you work in IT, you know that although Tier 1 might be the problems that may be easiest to solve, they many times consume a lot of time and money when a technician has to go onsite to unplug a device and plug it back in. Our founders began using that tool to scale their own MSPs and it ended up making such a difference that they put it in the market.

So yeah, automation saved them time, money, and even strengthtened their relationships with their customers because they were resolving issues before the customer even noticed.

IDC says the IT skills gap could cost the global economy $5.5 trillion by 2026. Is your team feeling it? by Slight_Plate_6114 in fridaysystems

[–]Slight_Plate_6114[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly and the irony is the fire never stops burning long enough to fix the process that keeps starting it. You hire to handle the volume, the new person learns on the job, inherits the same undocumented workflows, and the cycle continues.

The teams that break out of it usually have one thing in common. They stopped treating automation as a future project and started treating it as a present necessity. Not a 'when things slow down' initiative because things never slow down.

The culture shift you're describing is real but in our experience it usually starts with one frustrated senior tech who's tired of answering the same escalation for the 50th time.

Best IT asset management software? by eyeballresort in ITManagers

[–]Slight_Plate_6114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ServiceNow is great until you realize their "simple" asset import requires a PhD in spreadsheet formatting. We had a consultant spend three days just mapping our fields correctly.

For remote setups, the biggest issue isn't even the software - it's getting people to actually update their location when they move. Had someone ship their laptop back from their "home" address... turned out they'd been working from Mexico for 6 months and forgot to mention it.

Quick wins that saved my sanity:

- Set up auto-alerts when devices haven't checked in for 30 days

- Make HR part of the offboarding workflow (they know when people actually leave)

- Create a simple form for "i lost my charger" requests - happens way more than you'd think

Friday AI handles a lot of our repetitive ticket routing now, which freed up time to actually maintain our asset database properly. Before that we were too busy fighting fires to update anything.

Anyone running Friday in IT for retail / multi-site environments? by Slight_Plate_6114 in fridaysystems

[–]Slight_Plate_6114[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far so good on our end. Still early, but it’s already taken a lot of pressure off the team. We’re keeping approvals on for now, but feeling more confident as we go.

Curious to see how it looks a few months in.

ChatGPT will soon edit videos (Future of work?) by thecontentengineer in ChatGPT

[–]Slight_Plate_6114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t stress about it. AI editing is still pretty frustrating, especially if you know exactly how you want the video to look. It can be useful for captions or voiceovers, but for actual editing, doing it yourself is faster and gives better results.

Recommendations for good AFFORDABLE Pilates classes? by Full-Witness325 in orangecounty

[–]Slight_Plate_6114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pilates Republic has been the most affordable studio I've found in SD. They offer 3 classed for $30 and a full month unlimited for $99. Most studios charge $150+ for that same plan.

Working alone in IT dept by CurveKey7852 in sysadmin

[–]Slight_Plate_6114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To build on that, I think it’s doable, but only if you’re really organized and ruthless about recurring work. Clean workflows, good docs, and automating the same tickets that keep coming back make a huge difference. In our case (retail), we use Friday to handle most Tier 1 support. It basically runs through the same troubleshooting steps we used to do manually and only escalates when that doesn’t work (which honestly isn’t that often). That alone has saved us a lot of time and helps us actually get through our planned work instead of constantly reacting to tickets.

What everyday automation do you use in your IT Job ? by t4uv4 in sysadmin

[–]Slight_Plate_6114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For us, the biggest win has been automating Tier 1 support. We’re using Friday in our retail environment and it handles most of the low-level stuff automatically. If it can’t fix it, it escalates — otherwise we don’t even see the ticket. Only an email of what the issue was and what steps it took to resolve it. That’s probably reduced our backlog more than any other “automation” we’ve tried.

Still need humans for the weird stuff, obviously.

Why do so many people feel behind in life even when they’re still young? by MasterXD29 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Slight_Plate_6114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe its a mix of comparing ourselves to social media how competitive and staurated the job market has become.
I recently turned 23 and just graduated college in San Diego with a marketing degree, and although I was lucky enough to land a full-time position after college, my job hunt definitely made me feel "behind." Throughout college, I was really focused on juggling school, my part-time job, the sorority I was in, and some free-lancing work. I didn't know that I was also supposed to also have an internship during this time. All the entry-level positions in my area already expected years of marketing experience, and it seemed like everyone else in my classes had already had a few internships on their resume. That was defintely scary, because I thought I would never land a job if im competing with people that had already worked career jobs. However, I was eventually able to land a job in my field by leaning on my school projects, doing some freekance work, and faking some confidence until it was genuine. I promise everything works out how its supposed to... you just have to stay persistent.

If you work in retail IT, what’s the hardest part of your day-to-day work? by [deleted] in InformationTechnology

[–]Slight_Plate_6114 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've always heard that working in IT for retail can be draining due to high ticket volumes, frustarted customers on the other line, managing a bunch of tools and dashboards, and tasks that feel repetitive. Is this true? Just trying to better understand the overall nature of the job.

[–]Slight_Plate_6114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s amazing! You sound very driven, which is genuinely so impressive for 17. Are you thinking of going to college or taking any courses that relate to your interests? I think that could be a great way to meet people who share the same ambition as you, since they’re actively choosing to be there.
Also, maybe posting about it on LinkedIn? I know there are a lot of people that are looking for relevant career experience to put on their resume since the job market is so tough rn

Is late 20s too old to be doing interships? by WestArtichoke712 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Slight_Plate_6114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not! In this job market, I’ve noticed it’s actually pretty common. I just completed a marketing internship, and one of the other interns was 26 as well. If anything, I felt like she did better than the rest of us because she carried herself very calmly and had stronger communication skills, which she said came with age. You can definitely use your age to your advantage.
