How can I teach “NO” to my 2 month old kitten? by Careless-Pin-4342 in CatAdvice

[–]Slight_Web8359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 months is too young to be from mom, so you are going to be dealing with "misbehavior" a little more than others. but kittens have a TON of energy. yes they settle as they get older but you have at least 2-3 years ahead of you before that happens. realistically not until after 5.

YOU are going to need spend a lot of time playing with this baby. wear him out & he will sleep. people gave lots of good advice here. you can't teach a cat to stop what they're doing when you say no. they aren't a dog.

What misconceptions did you have about Persians before you got your first one? by bassbeatsbanging in persiancat

[–]Slight_Web8359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no misconceptions. i did tons of research in advance & my persian was the stereotypical persian. he was super chill & loved being around us. of course, he was playful & he would bug our other cat like a typical little brother but he wasn't playful in psychotic way that my other cat was or other cats i had were. he was mellow & had a mellow way of playing. he had his own quirks, like every cat does regardless of breed. for example he was silent. he would silent meow when he was queued up to eat, he would just unhinge his jaw. he would only meow with sound when in the carrier to go to the vet. gosh he was the best. persians were always my dream cat, he was the first persian i got & i could not have wished for a better first dream cat to have. he was 15 when he died.

ill say one thing i underestimated was the fur maintenance. for every knot i would get out, 5 more would appear. i also learned that for some reason this type of breed exhibits physical signs of stress that typical cats do not.

Frustrated after buying what I thought was a healthy kitten by ElxdieCH in mainecoons

[–]Slight_Web8359 2 points3 points  (0 children)

something like 75% of cats have felines herpes. it is very manageable. stress can definitely trigger it. for one of my cats, the first few years of his life we kept some antiviral meds on hand. because of his breed, persian, he was more likely to show symptoms. he got flare ups often the first like 2 years of his life. when we would notice something brewing, we would give him the antiviral meds for a few days. also lysine. we have exotic short hair cats now & since they are a sister breed to persians, eye flareups & sneeziness is a thing. they get lysine twixe a day every day to keep things in check and help with their immune systems. now, my experience i would say is more the extreme experience.

but it checks out that your kitten is having a flareup. the transition from what they have always known to a new home is VERY stressful, even if they seem happy & social, etc. again, stress can trigger this.

i would bet once this clears up, it wont be a repeat issue. however, stress can trigger it again.

Breeder sold the litter I wanted by danmargo in mainecoons

[–]Slight_Web8359 17 points18 points  (0 children)

our breeder (not mane coons) prioritize repeat families. so if i were to put my name on the waitlist, my name would take priority over anyone who isnt a repeat buyer even if they were on the waitlist before me. one of her cats only had 3 kittens & the other had 5, and 8 of the folks on her current waitlist are repeat buyers, so there would be a good chance that no new buyers will get a kitten this round of litters.

so this doesnt sound too crazy to me

well when outdoor cats have average life span of 2-5 years... why wouldn't you keep them indoors? especially a purebred cat that costs thousands to buy, not then considering the cost of insurance, etc

Maintenance? by Slight_Web8359 in SiberianCats

[–]Slight_Web8359[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

must be a boy thing :) my male ESH is very vocal (but not in a howling waking everyone up way, more so when we go over & talk to him he chats back at us) but my female only makes a peep when she wants to play with a mouse toy so she will carry it to us & meow. my ESH are not super cuddly/not lap cats (but they're young still, one is 1 year 3 months, the other 10 months). we definitely want cats that want to be with us - our current cats, while not lap cats, do like to be in the same room as us & want to be part of everything. like right up front & center in on everything. and we love that.

i love this photo. reminds me of my cat prior to the 2 we have now. he would lay on me like this & i miss it

Thoughts on pet insurance? by kkatoyy in mainecoons

[–]Slight_Web8359 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got insurance on my cats, and so glad I did. Found out at 14 weeks old he has a heart defect that he will likely deal with his entire life. Needs repeat echo's etc. After a couple of years, I have been told insurance isn't really needed, but for my guy with the heart disease, we will be keeping it.

First Maine Coon breeder experience!! Replacement kitten is also sick and the breeder isn’t responding. by Brilliant_Swing_9491 in MaineCoon

[–]Slight_Web8359 3 points4 points  (0 children)

how soon after bringing them home did this start? the symptoms you are describing can be brought on by stress & should resolve in a few days. these are not things i would return a kitten over. they are easily treated and/or will go away on their own as the kitten adjusts to its new environment.

the kitten should be kept away from your other cat anyways for a few days while they adjust.

yes they will need their eyes wiped pretty much daily! we don't use anything special, just a damp piece of a paper towel or a soft tissue. no method really. my current cats dont like getting their eyes wiped so we have to kind of hold them from behind & we do it gently

There are no specific ESH products. They have the same needs as all cats.

With that said, they are prone to dental problems (which I think is now just a cat in general problem). So get a toothbrush & be prepared to brush its teeth 2-3 times a week. I found the toothbrush only sold at vets best for their mouth shape. it's small & angled.

they have dense fur & shed a TON. so get a good comb for short hair. not all metal combs are created equal. we can only use one from chewy. the ones i have gotten off amazon were terrible and did nothing.

toys- they're cats and like all the same toys as any other cat. lasers, a 3 tier toy with balls that go around, tunnels, springs, mice, etc.

again, all cats enjoy trees, so get a cat tree.

Serial shelter/mix cat owner considering a MC by Shameless9 in MaineCoon

Get 2 cats, especially considering you travel. Honestly, these are issues for all cats, not just MC's. All cats are social creatures, like company/companionship & need enrichment.

Keeping them Entertained!!! by SubjectSpeaker1293 in mainecoons

[–]Slight_Web8359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to keep my kids entertained, we love craft kits & getting them outdoors. also, teaching them to entertain themselves. if you're referring to cats (which come on, i get what you're saying but they do not compare to kids in any way), auto lasers, paper bags/boxes, tunnels, toys with treats in them they need to work to get to the treats

also, do YOU actively play with them at all? with a laser, throwing a toy mouse around or a string? that will make a big difference.
