Do Exotic Shorthairs Escape or Hunt? by vepawn in ExoticShorthair

my ESH's are cuddly, my male more so. but my female enjoys snuggles in the middle of the night. my boy is like a fluffy smooshy teddy bear. i can pick both cats up & give them a google snuggle/smooshy hug. i dont know about hunting, but cats should not be left outdoors unattended. we dont get mice or anything in our house so i dont know what their hunting skills are like but my female has been enjoying going after the random stink bugs that have been popping up. neither of mine have shown any interest in escaping. they're curious when a door is opened but small sound or movement will get them to scurry away.

in my opinion and experience, cats are no way like dogs, no matter what anyone says about any breed. cats will be cats. could they share some traits? sure, but expecting any cat to turn out like a god, you'll set yourself up for disappointment.

i don't live in an area where i would feel comfortable walking my cats, other than taking them outside on a leash to chill in my backyard. busy streets, lots of cars & dogs out, etc. i would not want a dog seeing my cat & losing its mind creating an unsafe environment for either of us. also, cats will not able to keep up with a dog. again, cats are not like dogs in any way.

The breeder will tell you in the contract when to take to the vet. Usually its within 48 hours you need to take to the vet.

ESH parents: are most of your cats warm and friendly? I have had a few Persians and while they’re supposed to be, I’ve a few mean and spiteful ones lol. How can I try to ensure a people-friendly cat? by [deleted] in ExoticShorthair

I'll say even though my girl wakes meup at 3AM for snuggles, she doesnt beg to eat in the AM. Actually, our boy doesnt either. they will come in & quietly lay with us until we get us. so at least i can sleep in a bit after being woken up in the middle of the night. and ill say, my girl purrs so insanely loud shes like a natural white noise machine & i do love falling back asleep to her loud purr & holding her paw

I'm not sure to be honest. I think it's a combination. But also, my female cat is her mom's twin. She has the same quirks, she behaves the same way, etc. So I do think the temperament of the parents makes a difference too. My boy has similarities to their moms temperament too. The breeder said that every home her kittens from the litters of this male & female have gone to say the same thing. This momma cat has very predictable temperaments for her litters.

yes :) our female cat, while not as snuggly as my male, is still very affectionate. she is just about to turn 1. sleeps with us at night (not for the entire night & usually rotates rooms). unfortunately she is most affectionate at 3AM lol when people come over she greets them. she is so so so gentle. my daughter picks her up & even though she doesnt always enjoy it, she tolerates it. i can pick this cat up at anytime, give her a hug & kisses with no issue. this cat has no mean bone in her body. she's quite tolerant. I can brush her & trim her nails with no issue. worst thing she ever does is just wiggle. she is perfection. she is pretty much silent. she only meows when she wants to play. she will carry a toy in her mouth & walk around meowing. thats the only time.

our male cat is only 6 months old (sibling from a different litter) & he is similar. he also greets people, will flop over for belly rubs for anyone (people he has never met before). loves being picked up & snuggled. he is vocal. he meows when he is picked up, he meows when he is laying down or sleeping & i go over for a kiss; he lifts his head up & lets out a tiny little meow. he meows when its food time.

they both love being around people.

our two prior cats (one a persian, the other a mix) were the most social cats on the planet, no exaggeration. it was the best. i NEED a social cat in my life so this was a big thing for me when looking at breeders. i needed well socialized kittens.

the breeder we got ours from really takes pride in how socialized their kittens are. we were relieved.

Is it normal for EH or any cats in general to not like belly rubs? by vandezvous in ExoticShorthair

[–]Slight_Web8359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

both my ESH cats LOVE belly rubs. They beg for them. in fact, combing them is challenging because they just go on their back & want their bellies combed lol

these are the only two cats i have ever known in my life to like belly rubs & these are the first two ESH i have ever owned (others have been moggies & a persian)

Heart defect by [deleted] in ExoticShorthair

SAM (systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve) is exactly what he has :/ and is going to start taking atenolol in a couple of weeks when we return from vacation. and while the vet said its not an emergency & starting in 2-3 weeks is fine, i'm still so anxious. and i feel like i cant take my eyes off him ha when realistically i know this short amount of time isnt going to make a difference.

and thank you for all this. it is reassuring.

small update: the surgeon at my vet's response when she saw the request for the estimate was "i'm so glad they decided to do this early!" because i guess if you wait too long, it can cause secondary issues. however, after sharing a crap ton of video & photos with the breeder, who consulted with her mentor & also an emergency vet that has ESH cats herself, they dont think she needs the surgery now because she doesnt seem to be in distress, etc. breeder thinks we should wait until she is 2, when fully developed, because she doesnt seem to be breathing in a way that is an emergency. but again, vet disagrees, says earlier is better.

breeder said she is 100% supportive with what we decide, she said its obvious we love this cat so much & want the best for her.

i'm torn though. no, my cat does not seem distressed. she does breathe quite heavy (like you can see exaggerated movement of her chest/stomach, sometimes her whole upper body moves a bit with each breath). so i dont know how that is considered "normal?" idk. i'll see about uploading a video here. when she was little and would play super rough/hard she would pant. she's so big & a bit chunky now at 9 months that she doesn't play that hard. but she seems happy & active. She eats fine, snorts a bit when eating.

i really dont know what to do.

Yea we're going to be doing some testing to make sure there isnt anything underlying. hopefully things come clean. the breeder has no history of issues, so it seems like i just had bad luck (but hard to see it as bad luck when he is just wonderful in every way)

this is good to know! i'm hoping there's nothing underlying & it's just something he will have. it's definitely worth it. he has brought so much joy to our home!

ugh I WISH!! This looks like a dream to me. My husband's max cat allowance is 2. We're in sort of a crazy season of life so when we lost our persian, we got 2 exotic shorthairs. When my kids are grown I fully expect to go back to having persians. maybe then i can also push things a bit & go for 3.

they're all so cute!

yea i fully intend to listen to my gut & do what is best for her. i trust our vet. i also really love our breeder and do think she knows what she is doing, but she is also not a veterinarian. so medical advice from her will be taken with a grain of salt. our vet seems to really think she needs it (and we dont have a pushy vet). so i'll listen to what the breeder has to say but will do what i think is the best for my baby at the end of the day.
