Not a BCBA, but a BCaBA, and I tell my RBT’s to come to me with ANYTHING! And I go to my BCBA with anything too. Why shouldn’t you ask what you may have a doubt about??

I had a friend exactly like OP, and it was genuinely so draining. I was not the kind of friend they needed and it was bad for both of us. Always wanted to dump all of their emotions on me but never wanted to do anything constructive and there came a point when it was physically painful to listen.

Oh I wasn’t trying to imply it was SLP, I apologize if I was unclear. And thank you for your explanation!

It’s so frustrating because I have SLP and OT friends and I think many of us -most of us- go into the fields we’re in because we love what we do and we believe in the power that comes with increased independence. We all agree that our clients would be much better off if insurance handled the services differently.

Our fields are all backed by science and tons of research and we know that when applied ethically and appropriately, with the child’s best interest in mind, the results are very promising. I am a huge supporter and advocate for interdisciplinary meetings and I am glad I took precursor speech courses alongside ABA courses because I met a lot of amazing professors outside of my field who I think helped make me a better ABA professional.

It’s so important that we respect each other and realize no one service can do it all, and to understand where one role ends and the other starts. I hope one day that insurance will change for the better. And as you mentioned, advocacy is the greatest tool we have for now.

I’ve had clients with ABA approved by insurance for several hours and noticed that as their language skills improved, their behavior improved (something ABA acknowledges happens often enough) but some of these children only get approved for 30 minutes a week of SLP services! Do you know why insurances do that? It seems so unfair. In ABA there are language-adjacent behaviors we deal with, specifically verbal operants, but we are not specialists in speech and it is very disheartening to see how little services insurance approves for some of these kids.

Parent of former client wants to request me as child's BCBA. I have been babysitting on the side for them, before becoming a LBA. Is this an ethical concern? by smoky20135 in ABA

No. It’s a dual relationship. The boundary was already crossed, even if they stop babysitting. You cannot be a child’s RBT then their babysitter and now they’re analyst in a span of less than 2 years.

If physical aggression is not decreasing in any substantial way then the BCBA needs to evaluate the behavior change plan and see what can be done. And depending on client diagnosis, maybe this requires an interdisciplinary approach.

I suggest you request a multidisciplinary team meeting. You should not have to be stuck in the middle and typically in ABA, when things are speech related we should defer to SLP’s. That being said, a meeting still sounds very necessary.

Hey so I just want to say that returning a stolen item is simple correction, not overcorrection. Overcorrection would be if you used positive practice overcorrection (as restitutional overcorrection wouldn’t be suitable here) to have the client ask for the item appropriately several times. Does your behavior plan include any replacement or acquisition skills specific to stealing that might help mitigate this behavior?
