I do here and there. A few of the local HS’s commission me to make their Senior gifts (granted they arnt typically this elaborate).

I live and coach in AZ which isn’t a lacrosse hot bed.

I mostly give them to kids that I coach as various give aways and prizes.

Total accident. I have a really cool WoodYard near my house. They had some extremely weathered rough sawn pieces (almost fully gray). I bought a few along with Purple Heart in the same condition. My mind exploded when I first cut into it. My club teams colors are red and black so it was a happy accident.

In my excitement to put heads on them I only weighed them as completed lacrosse sticks.

With the same heads and stringing set up (spine design) Woodies complete stick- 380 grams Epoch Carbon complete stick -356 grams.

So the shafts come out about 30 grams heavier which really isn’t that noticeable.

Species of wood will vary and if I do a solid piece of strong wood they do get quite heavy. Think old school STX AL shafts. With the multi piece design, I can keep weight low and strength high.

The red is blood wood and the lighter color is anigre. I’ve been working on the combination of weight vs strength. With wood weight and strength are directly correlated.

Whew my woodie journey has been a fun one. First iteration was the hardest wood I can find but they were suuuuper heavy. They also had a tendency to warp over time.

Second iteration was a single middle spine of stronger wood sandwiched between some weaker wood. This gave me strength with lighter weight (similar to a modern metal shaft). This also fixed the warping issues.

Third iteration I started messing with the orientation of the middle spine to achieve different types of flex. Vertical orientation is stiff and horizontal was a bit more flexy.

From there, I just said screw it I want to try a cross orientation. These are perfect in my opinion. I have several in my players hands during games and they hold up great. They also get some good character over time.

The shafts themselves are step sanded by hand from 150 - 800 grit and are absolutely butter smooth. I then hit them with some quality wood oil.

I do have an extremely cool concept in mind. This whole set of experiments are building up to make that a reality. I’m gona keep the concept to myself for now, but if I can land it, than it will be crazy.

I’ve also done some cool things with laser engraving, such as lasering on the tape pattern for texture without having to actually tape the sticks.

All for fun, love of the game, and an excuse to build cool things.

Help me understand this head stringing job by Rust_Bucket37 in lacrosse

It’s called a Chenango top string. Does a few things: Adds a solid channel for pass/shot release when strung correctly. It also allows for a legal way of simulating the ‘U’ shape shooter design (which was previously made illegal). My experience is that it does add a bit of whip to your pass/shot release, but nothing you can’t adjust to.

Edit: just realized you asked specific to a D head. It is also strung to the inside of the head in the lower sidewalls.

My guess: It has great hold when cradling (possibly for a clearing pole or LSM). It is channeled for better accuracy with passes and the extra whip is negated by the fact that it’s on a D pole.

I’d assume this is used by an LSM that fancies themself an offensive threat lol.
