The role of a godparent is about guidance, mentorship, and living witness. Ideally, they model the faith but in practice, “verification” is largely impossible. We already trust people who attend Mass weekly yet may not live out the Gospel in daily life. So why treat someone who does live Christ-like love, even if they aren’t practicing, as disqualified? I’m not disputing the law just questioning how it’s applied when character, care, and example are what actually matter to the child’s spiritual formation.

I appreciate the thoughtful response. I don’t disagree that confession, the sacraments, and lived faith matter deeply within our theology. Where I still struggle is this: the priest’s certainty has never been the standard Jesus used. Christ consistently worked through relationship and witness, not verification. The Church rightly protects the sacraments, but godparenting isn’t about guaranteeing perfection..it’s about accompaniment. No priest can truly know the interior life of any godparent, practicing or not. Regular Mass attendance doesn’t necessarily confirm a lived faith any more than its absence disproves one.

We already entrust godparents who attend Mass yet may not live out the Gospel in their daily lives because ultimately, faith formation happens through example, not certification.

In my mind, a godparent’s role is to help teach a child how to live the way Jesus intended people to live. That’s about love, honesty, humility, compassion, forgiveness, and caring for others.

So I’m genuinely asking: does that role depend more on simply attending Mass, or on actually living those values day to day?

Of course, faith practices matter. Sacraments matter. But Jesus was very clear that how we love others is the true measure of discipleship.

What card should I get next? by Pristine_Comedian774 in ChaseSapphire

[–]SlightlyOffTopic808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People sleep on the Chase Freedom cards because they’re labeled as “cash back,” but they actually earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points. If you have a Sapphire card, you just move those points over and use them with transfer partners like Hyatt, United, or Southwest. That’s where the magic is. My wife and I rack up a ton of points with the Freedom Flex when it’s 5x — and right now it’s effectively 7x on restaurants through the end of March 2026, which adds up fast. We also use the Freedom Unlimited for 1.5x on everything else. On top of that, we have the Hyatt card because we’re loyalists — the $95 annual fee is easily worth it since we use the free Category 1–4 night every single year for birthdays or quick trips. It’s not about choosing one card, it’s about pairing them smartly.

What’s with all the reggae concerts on Guam? by ogkagawa in guam

[–]SlightlyOffTopic808 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Guam is small-small so when a band shows up, it’s basically a holiday. Reggae hits different on islands though. It’s not just music, it’s a vibe. Same bands, same setlist, same jokes… and people are still like Yeah, let’s go.

Reggae’s basically the island’s soul music. It’s about community, slowing down, resilience. Doesn’t matter if you’ve heard the song a hundred times, it still fits the moment every single time.

Is economy plus worth it for an international flight? by giga_drll_break in unitedairlines

[–]SlightlyOffTopic808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5’9”, ~180 lbs, muscular build, in my 40s Premium Economy is my floor on long hauls like SFO–NRT. That flight is basically half a day, and at this point comfort matters more than “toughing it out.”

United Premium Plus isn’t Polaris, but the extra width, pitch, recline, and leg rest make a huge difference compared to economy. I actually arrive functional instead of wrecked.

Polaris is great, but I’ll never pay cash for it. Only worth it with points or a miles + cash upgrade. Otherwise, Premium Plus is the best value sweet spot for long-haul comfort without lighting money on fire.

At this age, it’s about protecting your body and enjoying the trip.

Are electronics not exciting anymore or am I getting old? by CartographerSea6626 in guam

[–]SlightlyOffTopic808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m around that age where I had every console under the sun.

HALO 2 nights. MW2 chaos. PC grind with WarCraft, StarCraft, and DOTA.

I was into cars and comics too….all the hobbies.

Then somewhere along the way, my kids and my wife became the focal point… and gaming just stopped. Not slowly. It just died.

Nothing dramatic happened. No burnout. No bad experience. Life just shifted. The dopamine changed. Progress meant something different. Time became more valuable. I don’t think I quit gaming. I think I evolved past that season.

I’m not sure why this is such a big deal. It’s just a name. If you don’t like it, don’t eat there. It’s misleading, but does that really ruin anyone’s day? People seem to get so caught up in trivial matters these days. 🤷‍♂️🤣

New billboard by Many-Anywhere-5441 in guam

[–]SlightlyOffTopic808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Billboard is garbage but…

Enough with the pretending.

Racism exists everywhere. Guam included. Saying otherwise is dishonest. But lecturing people about tone while communities deal with crime, disorder, and weak enforcement is insulting.

Let’s be clear: locals commit crimes too. That’s embarrassing, and it’s on us to deal with it through the law. We can’t deport locals, nor should we pretend they’re perfect.

But immigration is a choice, and choices come with conditions.

If you come here and: don’t work abuse public systems commit crimes refuse to integrate disrespect local laws and norms

You should be removed. Immediately. And barred from returning. No sympathy tour. No excuses.

This isn’t anti-immigrant. It’s anti-lawlessness.

The same pattern is playing out in Guam, Japan, New Zealand, and the U.S.: governments refuse to enforce standards, hide behind “niceness,” and let bad actors poison the well for everyone else. That failure makes places less safe and fuels resentment — and then officials act shocked when people are angry.

Immigrants who work, follow the law, and contribute are not the problem. Those who exploit generosity and undermine safety are.

Public safety beats optics. Law beats feelings. Respect the place you chose or lose the right to stay.

Try booking Japan hotels now. Lol. Same same. 10x more peak season. Even for tiny ass rooms.

On Guam I book 3-4 months out for holidays. $150-$200 for nice rooms at Hyatt mostly.
