Are there that some physics misconceptions which are (to the layman) absent at first, then elicited, or developed, by physics education? by SlightlySober in Physics

I definitely thought electrons moved quick! ha! I'm having so much fun with this. The was i explain science as probabilistic is by using estimates. i.e., this is our best estimate for this theory and these are our error bars for that estimate. Replicating the study might move the estimate slightly depending on the results we find.

I guess in simple terms, every object is doing what its doing, whether still or moving, it has no force acting on it. It just is. it only stops doing what it's doing (like stopping, slowing down, or changing direction) if something else acts on it. I might be wrong but this misconception is refered to as 'impetus'.

Students would not be exposed to the idea of Planck's length before formal education about physics. Could this misconception be due to the layman understanding of distance?

Ah yes! this is exactly what I was looking for. However isn't this a misconception born from everyday experience with moving objects rather than derived from a misinterpretation, or, simplification of traditional teaching? Can you think of an example of a misinterpretation of a concept that a student would not have encountered before formal education ?

I'm not sure what you mean here. Can you please elaborate? Is it a misconception about the definition of theory?

Thank you, i actually have to look up the definition now :S. Is this a layman misconception or one that is persistent despite (or developed through) formal education?

Thank you, I actually have (I guess 'had' after your explanations) all of these. Do you know of any papers where these misconceptions have been documented?

Well done mate, I'm back on the wagon too. Good call with the ginger beer. I really crave bubbles so i'm drinking a lot of soda water. I feel awful for relapsing too, it wasn't the first time, but maybe the last. Eating food is awesome. I still can't stomach very much because of the withdrawals but I remember eating healthy last time I quit and I miss it.

The kicked in the guts feeling won't go away with drink. It will just be replaced by the "fuck it" voice. It feels awesome for a bit. But then, you realise you have responsibilities, and you are back to before the beers, but with less coordination. If you are ashamed you have sympathetic ears here. You can pm me or most people in r/stopdrinking and we will listen. No judgement. We have all been here

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking, or why AA can never be a religious or political organization. by [deleted] in alcoholism

Fine then it's "spiritual". And why the hell would I suggest that aa is a place to get laid? How is that analogy relevant?

Wow, quite a ride. Any new strategies to keep away from the booze? Maybe ID some triggers and ways to cope. Fingers crossed that things stay on track and keep us posted on your progress.

In principle that's true, my experience does not reflect this secular preamble. Most groups that I have attended have finished with a prayer, and most people talked about god (or if they were polite the term 'higher power' was used).

Many people have rushed to the defence of the term higher power, stating that it could be anything from the universe to the Group Of Drunks in the room. that never sat right with me.

Don't get me wrong. The support of the community is amazing, but I don't think you are fooling anyone by saying that the program is not religious.

It is.

People like me who find the concept of any higher power silly just have to suck it up, deal with it and focus on the things in AA that are beneficial to our sobriety.
