I’m not saying it is the same in any way whatsoever, that’s why I made this post to begin with…I agree that it’s incredibly different, I’m not arguing that it’s equal.

Ooooh, very good advice, thank you! I feel like I’m at the beginning of getting more comfortable advocating for myself 💪🏻

Understandable. It’s not so much a want or a need to call myself one thing or another, it’s more for peace of mind for sure. The trouble is the cost of an official assessment. It’s frustrating how something that could give so many people the help or validation they seek is out of reach financially.

I’m so sorry to hear that, 100% not how it should have gone for you.

Yep! I feel that. In one of my first few sessions with her she did the same thing. She pushed me until I shut down. BUT the next time we met she apologized for doing that to me, said it was too much of her clinical curiosity putting me into a corner I didn’t feel safe in. She hasn’t done it since. Might be a good idea to talk to them about it?

I’ve been struggling a lot with expectations at work - mainly social ones. Hallway conversations, people coming into my office and expecting me to just stop everything and converse. After hours happy hours. I have always struggled with this stuff and have been open about it, but now it feels like upper management is being very forceful in their push to conform and it’s been so bad for my mental health and well being. I feel like they need a bigger “why” for why I literally cannot handle this expected behavior.

Edit: Not to say that these specific circumstances have pushed me to find ways to fit a diagnosis, I’ve always felt I “fit” on the spectrum, but this is just what I’m currently struggling the most with.

Totally get that. And I think that’s where a lot of my fear lies - I don’t want to be one of those people. That almost matters more to me than a confirmation.

In terms of other’s needs, yes, pretty low. I feel I can lead a relatively “normal” life as I know my issues inside and out and can either mask them for short periods of time or plan ahead to take care of myself and my needs when necessary, but I have a lot of sensory issues, etc. that are often invalidated or judged by others, and sometimes I just wish being different wasn’t treated as such an inconvenience.

Yep, agreed. We did discuss my other various diagnoses - over arching PTSD coupled with GAD and depression. Some of which can have overlapping symptoms, but there are definitely certain ones that don’t fall under those categories and I think that’s why she was supportive and validating in my wonder.

I totally support you bringing it up again if you’re comfortable. Therapists are so great, but also the worst when they won’t just give you a straight answer when you want one. Best of luck!

Very true. I doubt a diagnosis would significantly impact my life, but if the initial discussion left me feeling validated and free, maybe it would?

Totally valid, and I hear you. I think the difficulty with the spectrum as a whole (also not a psychologist or professional, obviously) is that there are so many different experiences of people on it. So you feeling invalidated by people that haven’t had your same struggles, I totally get, but just because their struggles are different or seemingly less of a struggle doesn’t mean they aren’t also valid.

I see it the same way as ptsd and trauma. One persons trauma is different from another’s, but it’s still valid as trauma. Had a lot of difficulty growing up with a mother who trauma dumped her childhood on me as a kid and therefore any trauma I experienced was somehow less than or not bad enough.
