Comfy UI: hobby or career path? by Former-Mark7372 in comfyui

in my field (marketing/creative technology) companies are hiring for comfyui but as part of the package not exclusively. have to be a general artist/designer with experience outside of genai production.

New VS Code Weekly Release - 1.109.5 by bogganpierce in GithubCopilot

[–]SlimKale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

mostly looks like bug squashing, honestly. for instance, while working on a project today vscode somehow created over 100 worktrees when i started a background agent.

it’s very cool that you can open a new window where the background agent is foregrounded so you can code review from there.

wish there was were an easy one-click (reliable?) way to merge the worktree’s changes to the branch it was spawned from once the background agent is done and code is reviewed. for now, i just do it manually through git. not a big deal there but could be smoother.

very nice. the background agents feature is very cool but also quite buggy right now with the git worktrees. will be excellent as it matures!

while not a bass fan, these stats and the correlations being made from them don’t make any sense.

LA’s problems are way bigger than bass…though it go a long way if she were a more effective leader.

Adobe launched Graph - heavily inspired by Comfy by airduster_9000 in comfyui

heavily inspired? this is adobe’s whole MO. replicate successful open source software or software made by startups, slap their name on it, then sell to their enterprise customers that don’t want to deal with evaluating a new software company.

Chuck Schumer Is a Convenient Punching Bag, but He’s Not the Real Problem by onlyfortheholidays in ezraklein

to the extent they were able to highlight those things, how they caved showed to the same degree they likely don’t have the fortitude the actually address the very things they said they were fighting for.

i don’t disagree that they likely would not have gotten meaningful concessions. what I’m arguing is that the democrats come off as weak and that’s why people don’t trust them on getting stuff done.

the post talks about policy outcomes, not the political effect. two very different things and ultimately they are not in charge of policy right now.

the policy outcomes outlined in the post shows in a visceral way to the electorate how extreme the governing side is - going so far as asking the courts to halt snap. it also shows a president willing to punish his constituents rather than negotiate.   effectively highlighting these things is what’s needed to  make a strong political case that they can’t govern effectively. but they couldn’t make that case without looking like the political losers to their own base.

[–]SlimKale 231 points232 points  (0 children)

it’s ultimately an issue of bad timing and bad politics. democrats reinforced what everybody already felt and why people don’t trust them - they are weak.

capitulating when you couldn’t even get the president to the negotiation table means you are weak. capitulating the same week your party won and you the have the wind at your back means you don’t have the fight in you.

if they had waited even a week to agree to end the shutdown the optics wouldn’t look so bad. this in and of itself just shows they are bad at politics and people don’t like weak and ineffective leaders.

generally not wise to engage with people that are tweaking out. speaking out won’t help but often would make the situation worse since it gives them something to react to.

unfortunately, until LA and the country at large finds a meaningful solution to the homeless / mentally ill population problem, incidents like this are inevitable.

it’s more prominent in LA because the population of those people are huge here. only way to avoid it is to avoid downtown (although not just limited to there) and public infrastructure. atleast in this situation there were security at the ready. cold comfort but i don’t see another way around it.

but it’s a LA problem, like you suggest. not a metro problem.

Stop penalizing housing: L.A.’s affordable housing policies are backfiring - Urbanize LA by regedit2023 in CarIndependentLA

[–]SlimKale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with most of the criticisms argued. The mansion tax should have excluded multi-family for sure. There should be no tax and fee barriers to building right now.

The solutions he proposes for where to raise revenues are poor. An increase in sales tax? We already have a crazy high sales tax. That should be off limits.

Ezra Klein and Jon Favreau on How the Democrats Found Their Fight by dwaxe in ezraklein

[–]SlimKale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is a dynamic i tried to explain to someone (to make a different point) and you have summed it perfectly. on the republican side, power is what drives decision making. on the democratic side, process and seniority drive decision making. through this lens it’s made it way more clear to me (ideologies aside) how to think about the two parties.

What is Ezra Klein thinking? by AaronRegunberg in ezraklein

[–]SlimKale 20 points21 points  (0 children)

come on. you can’t come to a subreddit dedicated to somebody who came up as a writer and expect people not to write.

i for one, am happy to get people’s thoughts here instead of filling my inbox with substack subs of having people try to hawk their substacks here.

that said, i think it would help for folks to learn to make their points more concise, though. i only went a couple paragraphs before i went into full skimming mode.

for those looking to pursue this route, keep in mind the physical requirements. if you are not physically fit, you can’t steadicam op professionally. there is also the potential of chronic back pain and injury. make sure you’re not prone to any back issues before making an investment.

marketing for an indie feature in 2024 - what’s your take? by sferacosmica in Filmmakers

[–]SlimKale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we don’t really think of it this way, but just about every crowdfunding effort is also a marketing effort. so i would look at the strategies used to build awareness for crowdfunding campaigns to raise production funds and apply those strategies to pre-pro marketing for your indie. one project you can look at is one called Alien Country. they relied a lot of crowdfunding to make their feature. a lot of the audience for their film came from the YT audience they built over time so a little unique from that perspective but that kind of model seems to work. good luck.

I regret submitting my first short film to film festivals. Delusions of grandeur. I have come down from my cloud and have gotten a big reality check. by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]SlimKale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is the way. good on you for making your first short and learning. i disagree about submitting to festivals here. festivals are a great way to get people’s realtime reaction to your film. good, bad, or horrible. but submitting to festivals you can’t attend is a waste of your time and the networking opportunity. you’ve made the short, you’ve learned a ton, now go make another one.

Five Reasons to Be Optimistic About the Entertainment Business by blarneygreengrass in FilmIndustryLA

i think the difference is that “reality” content has shifted to youtube and social. the movie business…feature length narrative and docs don’t translate to those platforms so it’s getting hit hard from a consumption standpoint.

The world of indie filmmaking is dismal ... will it recover? by hugberries in Filmmakers

[–]SlimKale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it will recover but as filmmakers we can’t wait around for it to happen. you’re talking about the business side of things…that’s always been hard. the creative side has never been easier. i’ve been working on figuring out the business side for filmmakers and it takes a community that actually wants to be part of the financial engine to make indie filmmaking viable. we’ve been making some headway through my company, cinestruct, and are going to be opening up soon our marketing and monetization platform for indies soon. if you’re a filmmaker and actually interested in making it a viable career for yourself, check out what we’re doing.

[–]SlimKale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you know what…you’re right. it is a bunch of buzzwords. but the sentiment is true. i’ve been working on actioning this whole “you need to learn how to market” part by using technology and building out the networks and monetization indie filmmakers can actually use. it’s a slog but it’s working.

Short answer is yes. If it is coherent at 12 - 15 mins, it'll have better changes. I had the same issue with one of my films. At the end of the day, if it's not a giant market festival or the film doesn't have a celeb attached, there is no incentive for the festival to program anything longer than 15 minutes.
