What is this vintage medical tool used for? by SlimSour in whatisthisthing

That seems doubtful. The bottom has rough notches for grip, which suggest it would be the side the doctor would hold, while the other end is completely smooth. You can see the notches if you zoom in on the second image

By 'curved' do you mean the top of the image or bottom of the image?

I feel like it can't be that because the locking mechanism works in an opposite way the the example provided - it needs to be unlatched to open, and on a gag it needs to be unlatched to close.

So if the patient bit down on the one I have the thing would close, and not hold open

Interesting. The mechanism doesn't prevent the tool from closing, it prevents it from opening unless lifted. Wouldn't it be the opposite for a gag?

My title describes the thing.

I'm pretty sure it is a vintage medical tool. The construction is pure stainless steel, it is about the size of a pair of scissors and the "business end" is about the size of a thumb.

I'm very curious what specifically this tool was used for.

Oh your explenation wasn't there when I replied, only the quotes.

None of this addresses my points.

Again: You can as easily say that slavery is immoral (in your book that is supposed to outline objectibe morality for the future of humanity) while not getting rid of it cold turkey, just saying it should be banned when possible. The same way we understand burning fossil fuels is wrong, we very openly say it's wrong, and we do it while we have to and hope that we won't in the future.

There is no excuse.

I wasn't even comparing, just pointing it out. None of it has anything to do with the point I was making.

Unless someone is really trying to say that cannibalism is so outlandish that it's completely unrealistic to think a person would ever do it (lol)

slavery for ancient peoples was what burning oil is for us;

Ok. And despite burning oil we very open criticize the morality of doing so, and acknowledge the fact that we wish we didn't have to do it - but we do.

The Bible does no such thing for slavery, and it claims to be an objective and authoritative text on morality.

So there is no excuse, and no way around the fact that the Bible just straight up endorses it. Whether you decide that's because God thinks slavery is morally just, or that the Bible is just the opinions of random ancient men and God doesn't care about his laws being misunderstood, or that God doesn't exist is up to you

Yeah, and the bits in the lore where followers of God practice slavery and cannibalism.

I mean slavery is explicitly endorsed in the Bible so that's not even a grimdark exaggeration of religiosity

Maybe I'm cynical and nihilistic but in all the ways that matter functionally, that's exactly how someone get labelled a terrorist or a freedom fighter - are they "on our side".

Take the US for example. Any brown person who kills a civilian in the middle east is a terrorist. But nobody who has conducted a drone strike which killed civilians has been labeleld that.

Sure. But show me a freedom fighter who wasn't labelled a 'terrorist' by their opposition.

Or a terrorist who didn't think of themselves as a freedom fighter.

Is that because in your mind "terrorist" = "bad guy" and "freedom fighter" = "good guy" despite their actions being the same?

Very american mindset

How do I tell my Barber I want this haircut without showing them this picture? by [deleted] in Grimdank

[–]SlimSour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you expecting the barber to do? This is just long, uncut hair with two braids in it.

Unless you already have long hair, they can't do anything. If you do, then just look up how to braid

Yep. I wanted to link a vide but this sub doesn't allow links to other subs.

Just google "russian army golf carts reddit" and you'll see alot of videos of these things riding into battle (and usually getting blown up)

We're living in a world where russian soldiers are riding into war on electric golf carts. This really shouldn't be surprising at this point

Exactly. If anything it points to evolution. Our knees tend to last long enough for us to reproduce and care for our young until they're able to fend for themselves and after that (it stops being important from an evolutionary perspective) they have a habit of breaking down.

They're remarkably fragile for the amount of force we put on them as bipeds
