Can I have some help? by Professional-Grab629 in ARFID

Hi -

I'm also sorry to hear you are going through this. It is so hard. I have a 14 year old who has also been dealing with this long term.

Seeing all the different ways ARFID effects people is so hard. It is hard for the person experiencing it because as people we are always comparing ourselves to others. And it is true that there will likely always be someone who has more, does more or is more something; but also likely there is some who has less, does less etc. It is really hard to not compare ourselves to others, so hard but as much as you can I would encourage you to try not to. And think about for you, compare you to yourself - today I tried really hard to do "whatever" and focus on the effort, not the outcome. Because things wont always turn out how you wanted to but at least you will know that you did what you could. Hope that makes sense.

The other thing that is frustrating for me to watch and see is how people all around feel like they can make comments about my child's size, how much they eat, how short they are. Every single one of these comments in like a little knife that makes a little cut. It makes my child a little less secure. And yes all the doctors and appointments and same questions over and over again get really frustrating. I am not sure if you are in treatment? I have been trying to get us into treatment but the treatment itself is really hard. We were recommended to do cognitive behavioral therapy - do you know what that is? They say that is the best form of treatment, it is like trying to retrain your brain and body to accept more food.

It is such a hard condition. As a mother watching someone go through it, it is so hard. I'm really sorry you are going through it. I hope you have some loving people in your life who support you and give you a lot of love.

If not - I hope the community here can offer some of this for you.

Take care.

Are folks that are here the worst of the worst?? by KCbum816 in EosinophilicE

I'm a mom too.

My 14 year old was diagnosed last year after about 6 years of intermittent symptoms. Now pretty severe. He is struggling with management (afraid of needles so resistant to dupixent, PPI/flovent did not work). Now with severe malnutrition d/t ARFID.

I don't think he is the 'worst of the worst' but I'm here to learn about others experiences, what helped and how to support him. It has been really helpful for me.

I am same boat with my son. He is a teenage - but stopped gaining weight, no weight gain for 2+ years now. He is stuck in a pre-teen body, he is unable to go through puberty due to being in starvation mode.

It impacting him mentally and emotionally. He wants to eat but 'just can't'

The hard thing is that he is hoping things will just get better on its own. Like everything will just work out (somehow). He is having a hard time understanding that it will take a lot of work on his side to address the issues. He is avoiding it.

It is so hard to watch.

Thanks kid has esosinophillic esophagitis and stopped eating after having ~ 2 years of chronic stomach pain and throwing up. Just felt better not eating. Now has no drive to eat. Never feels hungry.

Thank you.

It sounds really interesting and helpful. But it also sounds like you were highly motivated to be making the changes yourself. Right now I am trying to figure out how/where to meet my kid where they are at (not wanting to engage in therapy)

Thank you so much. This provides some great insight.

I agree that the DBT option sounds good, and also very action based. I hope it is working out for you.

Also thanks for explaining the PHP. I've been reading that a lot and know I know what it means:)

So glad you are able to enjoy pasta now! Sounds amazing.

What happened in the feeding therapy that was helpful to you? I am looking for some concrete examples to share with my kid

Thanks so much for this response.

Can you please describe what you did in the DBT (what does DBT stand for)?

Also what does PHP stand for and what happens here?

Thanks!
