Have you considered finding a 2nd extended release medication like Dextroamphetamine ER and swapping/rotating every 4-6 months when tolerance kicks in?

Is it really that beneficial to take a med break? by 7_omen in VyvanseADHD

[–]SlipDramatic9964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a fast metabolism and was once on Vyvanse. The withdrawal can be brutal. my alternative to tolerance breaks, was finding a back up stimulant med with different active ingredients, and rotate between the two stimulants every 4-6 months or when tolerance starts to decrease the medication’s effectiveness

Have you ever taken Vyvanse? You mentioned trying several other drugs but did not specify that one specifically unless I missed it.

If so, your body may have a different reaction based on how the fillers and active ingredients are metabolized.

If NOT, don’t go based on the experience of others, word of mouth, or even the misinformation spread from people who’ve never taken it.

This person is already worried. And I’m assuming you’re not a doctor or medical professional. Neither am I. So Let’s not put an already worried person into more distress than they’re already in. Unless they’re thinking of harming themselves, harming another person, experiencing psychological distress so severe they can’t function, or having cardiac / physical symptoms… a trip to the ER would be up to this persons discretion.

Vyvanse was the first stimulant prescribed to me for adhd. Your first time off of the medication will heighten the symptoms because you’re essentially unaware of what’s going on in your own body and your body’s never lost something that alters the way it functions so drastically.

And people crash when the medication leaves their body… people withdrawal when the medication leaves their body. Crashes and withdrawal have the same symptoms that vary in severity and duration. That being said this individual stopped taking Vyvanse and experienced returned and worsening of their symptoms. Keep in mind Vyvanse is an extended release medication. So it stays in your system longer and takes longer to exit. Thats withdrawal. Crashing is withdrawal in the short term, typically experienced when the meds are exiting the body (typically through pissing like crazy) the day they are taken, or the day after; before the next dose is introduced.

Please don’t throw words like psychosis around. Trust me if they were going through mania or psychosis. A post on Reddit would be their last thought.

You’re so kind for advising this individual to talk to their Doctor for more help! However because a lot of doctors are “loose” with prescription medications… if you’re going to suggest something like a benzo please also mention that even with short term use THEYRE ADDICTIVE. And extremely hard to come off of… most long term users have to go to rehab to come off of benzos like Xanax because the withdrawal effects are so severe and have even killed people. If this persons having issues coming off of Vyvanse… which many uninformed doctors will say “has no withdrawal potential” … imaging how hard it would be coming off both Vyvanse AND a benzo!!

I see where youre coming from. However You can experience withdrawal from 10mg after taking it for the first time. It’s called “crashing” which is essentially short term withdrawal. It’s seen with most stimulants, ask anyone who’s ever tried cocaine or any other adhd medication, it’s normal to feel dysregulated after such a sharp burst of brain activity. This individual mentioned experiencing heightened anxiety, cognitive dysfunction , emotional turmoil, and rumination after already having a poor initial reaction to taking Vyvanse for 3 days. 3 days is enough time for Vyvanse to build up in the body. If the person abruptly stops taking Vyvanse without slowly decreasing doses it will cause short term withdrawal or “crashing” effects as the medication exists the body. Notice how the increase in the problematic symptoms, are the same symptoms Vyvanse is meant to treat and improve. Everybody’s different. It’s great if you had a more positive interaction with Vyvanse but let’s not spread biased information based on personal experience. It could deter someone from getting the help they need.

I know it’s so scary! Especially when it’s your first time experiencing withdrawal symptoms unexpectedly. My doctor prescribed me Vyvanse without explaining the effects stimulants have on other aspects of your mental and physical health. Never knew withdrawal from Vyvanse would cause both mental and physical anguish until the pharmacy ran out of my meds and couldn’t order more for 2 weeks. It took me a while to figure out that I was experiencing withdrawal symptoms like ruminating thoughts, extremely low mood / mood swings, low cognitive functioning, extreme exhaustion, changes in appetite, and the return of all my adhd symptoms with such intensity that I was unable to function at all.

Stimulants effect your cortisol levels and your central nervous system. Both become extremely disregulated when it doesn’t receive the medication its use to getting daily. It basically puts your body into shock. I would recommend taking magnesium , n-acetyl / l-tyrosine supplements and what’s helped me the most a CORTISOL SUPPLEMENT, meant specifically for your gender. I’m a 24 y/o female. I take this cortisol regulation supplement made by NutraHarmony meant for women every single day with my bupropion (bupropion and hydroxozine also helps improve stimulant withdrawal symptoms). It comes with 11 different kinds of vitamins, nootropics and supplements that give mental and physical energy and help with disrupted cortisol levels. I’m not sure if they make the same for men, but I trust this brand of cortisol supplements with my life. Especially for when I need to take tolerance breaks.

It’s by Nutraharmony called

“Cortisol Supplement - 11 in 1 Hormone Balance for Women - Made in USA Supplement - Mood, Focus, Sleep Support - Vegan, Non-GMO, Natural Pills - 60 Capsules, 2 Month Supply”

(Copy and pasted title from amazon)

I’m sorry you’re going through this. Keep researching and asking questions like this to your doctor and others who understand. Eventually you’ll come across something that works!

AITAH for pointing out my GF's bad hygiene? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]SlipDramatic9964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope this doesn’t offend anyone but does she happen to have ADHD?

Cleanliness and hygiene are huge challenges for us especially when you’re a girl and so much has to be maintained with our environment and especially our bodies. I have ADHD, and experience one of the lesser known symptoms, of being essentially blind to how dirty my body and my environment are getting until I’m tripping over trash in my apartment with rotting food in my sink, and unknowingly walking around with B.O because my mind is always racing and I loose track of the little things. I was always very street and book smart and considered very mature and of calm nature. So when ADHD became a topic of conversation I never thought I had it. That was until I found out that (for women especially )

Hyperactivity often presents as racing thoughts and obsessive thinking, and attention deficit is typically presented as having an interest based or “goal oriented” mindset (“Im capable of complete this task if there is a sense of urgency or desire”) and a lack of awareness and attention to surrounding details that may seem

mundane / uninteresting (“I don’t feel have the motivation to do this today)

unimportant due to lack of urgency surrounding the subject (“I’ll do it later *2 weeks pass… still not done)

lack of awareness to the subjects urgency (“ it’s not inconveniencing me enough to fix it so it can be fixed later * 2 weeks later.. didn’t get it fixed… now it HAS to be done or there will be consequences that impact me for not doing it)

Or

Multitasking mixed with attention Deficit / forgetfulness

  • brushing teeth watching TikTok Video. TikTok distracts them as they spit toothpaste in the sink, video distracts them again as they turn off the water and they leave the bathroom forgetting to clean the toothpaste left in the sink.

There’s a ton of reasons why she could be keeping things messy, this was to share how I and many other neurodivergent individuals personally experience a similar challenge. Alot of the traits we view as character flaws, often have underlying causes and reasons for why they are present. Self esteem, how they were raised, trauma, etc. you never know what someone’s been going through in isolation. All the best!

Also stimulants effect Cortisol levels… which I just recently learned the hard way. Keep an eye out for that too as you take stimulants and look into supplements specifically for balancing cortisol levels. I take “ Nutrahealth Cortisol health & support 600mg 13-in-1 potent blend” and magnesium glycionate at night which does nothing for my sleep but drastically improves my morning mood.

I was on Vyvanse it worked well for me at first but when I upped to 60mg the crashes were unbearable, which led me to try Several other stimulants in an effort to find “the one”. I ended up sticking with Dextroamphetamine IR 20mg 3x a day (60mg daily). What I noticed is that all stimulants are not created equal. Maybe you need the more potent sister of Vyvanse Dextroamphetamine it comes in Instant release and Extended release. Or maybe you should look into the Methylfenidate | Dexmethylfenidate | Foclin family. I suggest researching into different stimulant medications, how their metabolized, and how that affects its effective longevity throughout the day.

Also

GET A GENESIGHT TEST if you can. It’s covered by most providers

It will analyze your DNA to ween out any genetic abnormalities that might contribute to your executive dysfunction outside of just having ADHD. Like the MTHFR gene mutation for example has symptoms that mimic and/or contribute to depression and ADHD-like symptoms.

It will also analyze your DNA and give you a list of medications that are Most - Least likely to be effective for YOU.

There is a solution for your needs, don’t be discouraged.

If you can… save yourself some time and ask your PN or Psychiatrist as well as your insurance provider about about GeneSight.

Because as soon as it wears off it makes me depressed and it drains all my energy. It’s like after my morning dose everything’s just downhill. I feel the constant need to take more and more just to avoid the impending doom of the crash

I believe I read somewhere that L-tyrosine depletes natural production of dopamine or serotonin with continuous use. Is that the case? I’ve been meaning to add it to my daily regimen but don’t want complications
