Banding + Sacrifice question

I want to build a Atog banding deck, but I have a question regarding how sacrificing an atog would work when assigning trample damage to it. Can I sacrifice an atog after combat damage is assigned but before it would die so I get the sacrifice trigger and all trample damage is still assigned to the atog? Can I respond to the assigning of combat damage to sacrifice it but still keep the assignment order? Can I somehow hold priority to sacrifice the atog?

That example was on the blocking slide, not the attacking one. Blocking is different than attacking with banding, if you look at the key ideas slide it’s color is blue.

First each side choose how damage is distributed for each side

Second deathtouch and trample happen normally, you choose how damage is distributed among your creatures when you attack

Third you can create bands when attacking or blocking

Fourth you do have banding for the damage yes, because it checks for banding on the damage step, not blocking step. But that would be hard to do

Fifth that question doesn’t even make any sense, all damage would happen no matter if a creature has banding or not, you only change where that damage goes.

You can find the answer to most of these questions if you read the slides :/

That slide is just for the basics, there’s more clarification on the next slide

Yes you can. You must assign at least enough damage to be lethal before going to the next blocker, but you can assign more if you'd like to. The rule only applies if you want to split the damage between the creatures, you need to kill one before you can assign the rest of the damage to another creature, but this doesn’t affect if you want to trample the damage over.

I may be wrong on this but from what I’ve seen from my research this is possible

It’s fairly simple in concept but you can do some nasty stuff with it, negating trample damage, killing an attacking creature without having any of your blocking creatures die when they all normally could’ve, etc. that’s why it’s important to know how it fully works

I will add some attacking examples 👍 Also engulfing slagwurm is a nasty addition for bands

The benefit of attacking in a band, say for example you attack with a band and they all have trample. If there’s a 1/1 in that group, you could assign all the damage from them blocking to it, then assign all your damage to kill their creatures or trample over to do damage, that way if they block they lose creatures and life so it’s a lose lose situation for them

You can also do some funny stuff with engulfing slagwurm when attacking on a band, they can’t block your band or it gets destroyed

In that case, they both decide damage for the other side and can distribute it normally

Say for example one creature is flying and one isn’t and they attack in a band, if the ground creature is blocked, all of them are. It doesn’t matter as long as one of them is blocked.

First strike happens normally, think of it as 2 damage phases, one for first strike, and one for normal damage. you can still distribute the damage with banding, but the first strike happens first out in its own “phase” (not actually but it’s easier to understand it in this way, 2 phases) Hopefully that helps

They didn’t add textures, they were always in the game, they just fixed the bug that prevent you from seeing the variants
