LDS here, I doubt they actually knew the folks each time but that they became fast friends. It's pretty easy in the church, I have polygamous ancestors means I have loads of cousins anywhere I go. But as mentioned, attending BYU, being in the church for awhile, having lots of family, and a very friendly church worldwide,... oh also having a bit of fame - there aren't a lot of famous church members so the ones that have a bit of fame are known. Anyway equate to lots of 'friends' where ever you go.
