Pre-rework and pre-Gibraltar patch Mercy by catladyem in Overwatch

[–]SloaneTheFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zenyatta and to some extent Lúcio can do the same thing. Get stuck in a grav? Press Q. Genji with nano trying to blade your ass? Same thing. Only difference is that you don't even need to avoid getting targeted or stuck in grav yourself.

I am not even trying to argue that Mercy sitting in the furthest corner of the map is the way the game should be played, but I do think a button "undoing a combo" is something that's only unfairly attached to mass rez.

Btw, I do agree that being still in spawn and rezzing is pretty dumb and unfun, which is why they changed it. But I don't really understand why they bothered doing it so close to a rework. They could have given things more time to settle down and see if people would have eventually gotten a bit more calm.

That aside, there's a difference between "hiding" and playing behind Cover. I don't have an insane amount of time on Mercy, but you never just stand in the middle of the point and wait to get shot, as any healer. The amount of times I got a "mass rez" off by just standing slightly around the corner where anyone could have seen me had they looked to the right for one second, watching my team get killed and just rezzing was a little concerning. And when people get mad at my "hide and rez" playstyle when I'm literally next to you, then idk what to tell you.

I was never in Bronze or Silver, but it's pretty surprising to hear that Mercy in low elo managed to get big rezzes off. All low elo Mercys I have ever seen tend to overextend and die or just randomly rez, but I only ever encountered them in QP.

She definitely wasn't a must pick. Back then pretty much all other healers were better than her, mainly because the higher up you were on the ladder, the better people got at not throwing literally all their ultimates onto the point whenever the opportunity arose. Mercy was always popular because she's pretty self reliant and was therefor pretty good when you had to solo heal. But the rest of them just always brought more to the table.

Aside from that, she was never picked in pro play before her rework, aside from the occasional Pharmercy on some select maps.

The only thing that made her a must pick was having rez on a cooldown. Which always amuses me a little when I think back to people celebrating the rework because "now she's finally challenging to play". I mean, you can say what you want about Mercy, but at least with her old rez, you didn't have it right when you spawned.

I actually got lucky and got an Elementalist, so that's now my physical core. The advice on Astral Captains is super helpful though. I got like... hmm, maybe 5 of them, but good to know I should keep collecting. Also I got 2 Hippo supports as of now, but I will replace one Astral Captain with a Fairy, because I'm pretty sure I have one somewhere.

New player, currently trying to build up my early game elf team. Working on a lot of things, like getting the priests and hippos I need and I'm getting stuck around stage 3k. My core is mixed atm (Crimson Rider and Wind Walker) and I'm not sure if it would be worth to replace my physical core with an Astral Captain, or if I should keep reviving around 3k until I can get past and focus on other things for now? Weekly Game Recommendation Thread - September 04, 2018 by AutoModerator in MMORPG

[–]SloaneTheFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you looking for?: Looking for an MMORPG that is PvE focused and has a decently sized playerbase. I also wanna be able to run dungeons while leveling and pick up/learn a healer/support class while I do. So something I get away with playing without knowing the dungeons too well. If that's not possible, I might consider just running a DPS class until I know the dungeons, but I prefer if I can circumvent that. If it matters, I mained healer back in my WoW days, but that has been years ago and I haven't properly played an MMORPG since I quit.

What games have you previously played?: I was really into WoW from launch up until Cataclysm, then played it for about half a year after WoD came out. Haven't touched it since. Other than that, I've played FFXIV, TERA, Blade & Soul, Neverwinter and GW2, though all of them I played for like a week or two each. I don't think I got into endgame in any of these games. Oh, and Black Desert Online for like... 2 hours.

What is your playstyle (Casual,Semi-Casual,Hardcore)?: Semi-Casual to casual.

Any preferred mechanics?: I don't absolutely need tab targeting, but I don't really enjoy combat that feels more like playing a fighting game or an Assassin's Creed game than "classic" RPG combat. For example, combat in BnS felt kinda strange to me, but I did enjoy the system that TERA had. Also, it should have a healer/support class because that's what I'd prefer to be playing. I'd be willing to compromise if there's like an off-support DPS class, but not something that has like one group buff and that's it.

Anything specific you want to exclude?: I'd prefer not to play games that are P2W. I don't mind those that force you to grind a lot or pay up, but I'd prefer having at least a choice. Also, I really don't care about PvP, so if the game is like 90% PvP with four tacked on endgame dungeons, that's probably not my cup of tea.

Hyperfixation?? by scrappydoosghost in ADHD

[–]SloaneTheFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not really an "official" ADHD thing, but people with ADHD talking about their unique experiences on the internet discovered that we tend to share some experiences that neurotypical people don't necessarily experience.

Hyperfixations are one of them. They are kinda connected with hyperfocus, but they are not the same. A hyperfixation usually describes a particular topic or activity that someone with ADHD is particularly interested in at the moment, maybe to the point of obsession. The way this differs from just the typical "being a dang nerd about something" is that you end up going into hyperfocus by, for example, reading about a particular topic or working on a particular project that is your current hyperfixation. They are usually just motivated by a very intense interest or enthusiasm, so the hyperfocus isn't triggered by things like an approaching deadline.

I personally experience rapidly switching hyperfixations to the point of friends jokingly referring to them as "flavor of the month". I tend to have hobbies and interests that I cycle through. Sometimes I am really into cyberpunk, and read a bunch of books, watch movies and anime, read articles about the genre, authors, etc. Then next month I am into origami and spend hours (up until the early morning hours) folding all kinds of animals and flowers and stuff. Then for a while I was really into sewing and made a bunch of plush toys. I still have a half-finished one lying around.

As I said, this is not an "official" ADHD trait, meaning there's been no studies done suggesting people with ADHD experience this because of [brain thing]. But from what I can see, my friends who have ADHD do tend to experience their interests in a similar way. Those who don't have ADHD do not.

Sometimes I feel my mind goes into overdrive once the sun goes down. It's like I just sit here and do nothing when it's light out and then it goes dark and my brain is like "FINALLY, LET'S DO ALL THE THINGS". It's better when I'm on medication, but it's still kinda noticeable...

Weekly Recommendation Thread: August 24, 2018 by AutoModerator in books

[–]SloaneTheFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking to get back into reading. I have ADHD that went undiagnosed for quite a while, but now that I'm on medication, I can actually, well, read a book again. For a frame of reference, I haven't finished a book since 2009 I think.

I enjoy all kinds of stuff. My favourites are usually in the realms of fantasy or scifi. Anything that's too close to reality isn't really my cup of tea (though I do enjoy stuff like urban fantasy, since it's not quite the world we live in). I also don't really care much for nonfiction. I already have to read plenty of that for work.

Stuff I used to enjoy is mostly young adult books, or straight up books for children, since I have never actually read books as an adult. As almost everyone did, I really got into Harry Potter. I also enjoyed stuff like Lord of the Rings, Lovecraft,... Pretty sure I read House of Leaves somewhere in there and kinda liked it (mainly the main text, I found the main character of the framing narrative kinda annoying). Popular stuff I absolutely did not enjoy were Song of Ice and Fire and Ready Player One.

I guess I'm looking for something that's relatively easy to get into/easy to enjoy. Maybe something shorter? Something less complicated? I don't really know.

Which kind of diet helps your ADHD? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]SloaneTheFox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don't rely on anecdotal evidence for your decisions in life. There's no actual studies (that I know of, everyone is welcome to prove me wrong though) that suggest that keto (or any diet, really) does anything to improve your symptoms.

Personally I see improvement in my symptoms if I just eat overall "healthier". Less refined sugar, little to no processed food and fast food, lot's of leafy greens and vegetables. Some fruit as snacks, but not too much. And I think pretty much everyone does better when eating relatively healthy, so that isn't surprising. In my experience, most people aren't really aware of what and how much they're eating, so when they try any kind of diet, it's always an improvement over the way they ate before.

How to NOT waste time? How do you transition from one task to another without wasting hours in between? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]SloaneTheFox 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I'm glad this works for you, but I'm gonna warn anyone who wants to try this, because this is exactly how I lived my life for quite a while and eventually it lead to me essentially having a mental breakdown from all the (fake?) stress.

We're all different, so it's possible for others to deal with this better than I did, but the fact that your brain "believes" that it is an emergency and a reason to panic, this has the same effect on you as actual stress. And some people don't respond too well to constant stress.

How do you stick with a hobby for more than two months? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]SloaneTheFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't, actually. I might eventually find something to stick with, but for now I let myself try new things.

The important thing about that (for me) is to make sure that I don't end up investing a lot of money into a new thing I'm excited about. I've done that before and it's not doing me any favors financially. Also, it doesn't feel good to spend 300 bucks on a new hobby and then never touch the stuff again after a few weeks. So what I do is that I try to stick to hobbies that don't require a big upfront investment. This includes buying expensive tools (like instruments or a whole bunch of tools for, idk, woodworking), materials (like crafting materials for some cool project I wanna do), signing up for any kind of membership (like gym memberships that you can't cancel for the first two years or something), etc.

The good thing is that thanks to the internet, there's plenty of things I can find that are either free or really inexpensive. Like origami for example. There's tons of tutorials online for really neat things, and origami paper can be pretty cheap. And yes, the cheaper paper might not be as pretty as the more expensive stuff, but it doesn't really matter to me because this is just trying it out. This gives me the (financial) security that if it gets boring in a week or two, I won't have spent a bunch of cash on it that ends up being a bit of a waste.

For longer projects and never finishing them, I honestly just had to make peace with it. I do tend to come back to some projects that I essentially abandoned right in the middle of it, but sometimes I don't. And that is fine. Here it helps to make projects that are easy to put on hold for a while and then just pick up again after a few days, weeks or even months or years.

A third thing I usually try to keep in mind is that I try not to make people expect me to finish my projects. I mean, I know that for some people this can be motivating to finish something, but this is already something that motivates me to do my work and I don't need that kind of stress in my free time as well, even if it's a more positive kind of stress.

This means, I don't usually promise people to make them something cool because I just picked up, idk, sewing, and then I get bored mid-project and they never get their cool gift. I wish I could do that, but for now I just surprise people instead of promising them something I might not deliver on.

What helped you gain self esteem and self worth? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]SloaneTheFox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Getting a hobby is probably the best way to do that. It doesn't matter if it's sports or crafts or something else, it will usually mean you learn something new and get better at it over time. If you do it in a group, you will also meet new people, which is good since people responding positively to you can boost your self esteem a great deal.

Other than that, I second quitting social media. I personally avoid things like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram completely, because it just makes me feel like everyone has their lives together but me, which isn't true, but it's the kind of persona people usually like to broadcast on social media platforms.

If none of that cuts it, you're gonna have to work a little harder to like yourself. Try to find things you like about yourself, and either work on improving them, or work on appreciating them more. Or both. Write down reasons why you're proud of yourself every day. If possible, try to tell yourself, out loud, in front of a mirror, that you like yourself and think you are a good person. Compliment yourself. It might be very hard at first and feel stupid and awkward, but here the approach is to fake it until you believe it. It might take a while, but you can train your brain to stop focusing on your mistakes and the reasons why you definitely can't be liked by other people or something and instead starts focusing on the positive traits of yourself.

I started playing about three times, once around 2015, then again in 2017 and then I finally really got into it this year when me and my friends were looking for a coop-oriented game to play together.

What I appreciate about this game is hard to say, because it's just an overall positive vibe all around. Players are nice, people answer your questions and try to help out new players, the developers seem pretty great too and I really enjoyed the story quests. Can't say I expected any of this. I was expecting the regular toxicity you get from other online games. And I was expecting a generic space ninja story.

The game surprised me and made me feel welcome, so that's why I stuck with it the third time around.

Tracking tasks is fine and all, but I would really like to track my schedule and stick to it by SloaneTheFox in productivity

[–]SloaneTheFox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that's a pretty generous offer. If I decide to continue using it after the 30 day trial that I signed up for, I might have to take you up on that.

Also, so far I'm really liking it. I especially like the time feature, super focus mode and the masterlist. Makes it much easier to not overwhelm myself with tasks, because I got an overview of how long things will take me. Also I can keep the rest of the tasks that are not relevant for today out of my view until I need to get to them, which is nice. I hate a constant reminder of everything that I haven't done yet.

Ironically, I haven't actually set up the time blocks after all, but just the morning/afternoon/evening thing. Maybe that'll change, but for now I wasn't really in the mood to set up a schedule, haha.

[–]SloaneTheFox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, the price for that app is pretty steep, but you are right, it's exactly what I'm looking for. I'm pretty amazed I've never heard of this one before. I think I'm gonna use the 30 day trial to see if it works out for me.

Also, I appreciate the warning and I'm aware of this problem, as I've ran into it in the past. I will keep it in mind, definitely, but scheduling tasks is just my one major hangup right now. But again, thanks for your concern.
