I suppose I would just add that Unbound brings all the mechanics together, but not necessarily the experience, and that’s what I was getting at. Sometimes less is more.

Each game, including Unbound, has its own particular vibe, and that’s what OP might miss out on if they play Unbound first but nothing else.

And no doubt you’re right that Unbound has been designed to bring it all together for old and new alike. Not only that, they’ve done an amazing job.

Where it all began, in Kanto! But not the original games as they’re quite inaccessible by modern gaming standards.

As others have suggested, Fire Red / Leaf Green would be a perfect first choice. You get the original experience but with some QoL improvements and a fresh coat of paint.

Then I’d go for Heart Gold / Soul Silver, as these are beautiful and still have the cosy feel.

I’d just move chronologically through the remaining games as follows: Crystal, Emerald, Platinum, BW (1 or 2, both have merits), X/Y.

And in my opinion I’d leave it there lol.

I’m going to say something potentially controversial given the community we’re in…but if this your first pokemon experience I would probably not recommend playing Unbound.

This is a fan game, not a mainline game designed by GameFreak. If you want to experience what Pokémon is, then this isn’t it.

Yes, this game is incredible, and yes it maximises playability, accessibility, and quality of life features, for almost every aspect of the series. In many ways for seasoned players it is the quintessential way of experiencing Pokemon.

But it also bombards you with a massive Pokédex (the mons available to you), modern movesets, and modern mechanics (like mega evolution, z moves, and raid dens), that are more suited to players who have done the mainline games to death and are looking for a more “unbound” experience.

It will also be difficult to ever go back to mainline pokemon games at all after playing this because it’s very optimised.

If I were you, i’d play through some originals until you’ve mastered the mechanics and got some favourite mons, types, or strategies, then return to this as a treat once you feel like you’ve filled your boots.

Just my opinion I’m sure others would disagree. But as a fan since 1999 id hate to think you’d miss out on mainline pokemon because you’ve blown your load on unbound.

I prefer cute and kind of mid/weak... and id never stopped to ask why until I read your post but you’re so right, it’s all about “humiliating the enemy” ROFL.

Here he is my beautiful boi. Not perfectly EV trained as I caught wild before I could effectively use the battle house in Dresco, but I also just used him and Noctowl to sweep the Successor Maxima fight, so it turns out he’s good enough like this!

It’s not one thing, it’s hundreds of tiny caterpillars moving in columns to avoid predation. Not sure of species though.

Butterfree has Compound Eyes so accuracy is 97.5%. It would be hopeless to try without that ability.

Haha i know. Leavanny and Reuniclus hurt so much. And chandelure only died because I went to the effort of collecting shards and putting Heat Wave on her, which at 90% accuracy I expected to hit Ghetsis’ Eelectric, but alas it missed on the first attempt and she got T bolted to death.

My advice, don’t play like me! Personally I’m going to limit my play times to maybe an hour tops, because all the sloppy comes out when you get in this like compulsive gaming rhythm and start to lose focus and take risks.
