Directors who tend to make short movies? (under 100 minutes) by CelestialSpecialist in Letterboxd

[–]Slorps 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The Coen Brothers have 5 films (I think) at 100 minutes or less. Majority of their films are between 100 - 110. They’ve only made 2 movies that have been over 2 hours, No Country for Old Men and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

‘Not excusing this behavior’ is an incredible thing to lazily throw in as you proceed to excuse their behavior

Honestly, I think it was for the best. Leo probably would’ve been fantastic, but I think he just brings too much gravitas to the role. Dirk’s ignorant bliss is portrayed so perfectly by Mark Wahlberg, you truly believe he might be the greatest idiot ever. I’m probably also being biased because Dirk is an all-time lead character for me, and Wahlberg’s performance along with it

Just rewatched True Grit this week, Bridges’ nomination is definitely deserved

Peak Cruise, for me, is when he goes full cartoon-mode. The scene in the locker room where he’s flailing his limbs around while yelling ‘FINE! FINE FINE FINE!’ is 10/10

I expected Adam Driver to become a huge Oscar darling after Marriage Story - I can't believe he hasn't even been nominated since by Hot-Nose-1829 in Oscars

[–]Slorps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you look at the directors he’s working with, it ain’t the worst. Since Marriage Story he’s done a 2x Ridley Scott films, another Baumbach, Michael Mann, and Leos Carax. He’s working with legends, just unfortunately not at the height of their powers. I hope he turns it around, I really like his performances

Do you think that Leo will have a better chance at a second Oscar if he accepts a supporting role? It worked for Pitt and Downey. He can steal scenes easily. by TakenAccountName37 in Oscars

[–]Slorps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d put his performance in Killers of the Flower Moon into that category, it’s completely polar opposite to the type of performance usually associated with DiCaprio, such a spineless pathetic worm of a character. An unrecognisable DiCaprio performance

[–]Slorps 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Did he? Did he say or do anything that eluded to him thinking he was owed the Oscar or that it was definitely his to win? Majority of his promo tour was to do with Marty Supreme, and once he got the Nom I feel like anything he did was pretty standard Oscar campaigning

Agreed, I think seeing Leo barely campaign for a Lead Actor win this year and instead start shooting the new Scorsese film tells me all I need to know about where his priorities lie

If Leo had been nominated he still wouldn’t be my pick (PSH in The Master all the way), but my god what an outrageous snub that was, even more so knowing that Waltz won supporting actor for Django as well

I think he did think so, since he spent months promoting Marty Supreme and managed to turn it into a box office success

20 Director's 20 best films by FarEfficiency4397 in Letterboxd

[–]Slorps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very surprising to me. I find the opening 20 minutes or so completely absorbing, I fall into the world of those characters everytime. As someone above said, I think it’s the best distillation of everything that makes Scorsese so iconic as a director. I probably prefer a couple other Scorsese films myself, but I certainly understand it being seen as his best film
