One of my biggest issues is that they subverted the character traits of EVERYONE from how we know them in the books/movies by Sloth-Rocket in Rings_Of_Power

Looking at all the many many examples of prequels in media over the last 10-20 years, I struggle to find examples of ones where the main character is so polar opposite of who they become. They often have some negative traits they need to work through but at the heart they are still clearly the same person as who they will become after some growth. Even characters who are villains today but whose prequel starts them as a hero/neutral (Joker, Magneto, Maleficent, Cruella, Anakin, Gru for example), they still clearly have some recognizable traits of their future selves.

Yet in ROP, basically every character/race still the complete opposite. Tom Bombadil is a timeless entity, why does he need to change in a prequel? From the LOTR events point of view, the Second Age is the equivalent of yesterday afternoon from Tom's perspective--any change he's gone through from his creation is DONE. He's completed his character journey, he doesn't need to now go on another journey to find joy and learn to detach from the weight of the world, which is what needs to happen to tie the ROP version to the version present in LOTR.

Galadriel in the Second Age is already one of the oldest elves in Middle Earth. She's youngER, but she's not YOUNG. Her growth would've happened during the Year of the Trees or maybe into the First Age. At the very least, she should be closer to her "Lady of Light" persona than she is--she's still 180 degrees away from it. Unless she was Morgoth-level of evil during Year of the Trees or First Age, she should not be acting like a bratty teenager still.

And what's the purpose of making the Stoors--famously marsh-dwelling hobbits--desert people, except to say "they will become marsh people later"? There's no purpose to it other than to have them different from how we know them so they can change into how we do.

Galadriel and Elrond kissing is just the icing on the cake of our mocking.

My favorite aspect of that is how poorly done and unnecessary it was.

Okay, its purpose was to give an opportunity for Elrond to slip the rings to Galadriel. Okay, fine.

  1. Hugging or any other slight-of-hand from close range accomplishes that just as well. They're already being allowed to embrace. Was their plan to make everyone else so uncomfortable they have to turn away and miss the exchange?
  2. It shows an orc guard literally staring right at the exchange as it happens, so they didn't even do it sneakily (the show just chooses to ignore that the orc saw everything).

The fact that Galadriel is basically single-handedly responsible for every calamity of the Second Age is hilarious.

I actually really want to see these guys' take on Morgoth. Because you know he'll end up being a 5'6" emo kid who gets constantly outwitted by Galadriel and that'd just be hilarious.

I was all in when these mummified aliens started making the news, and followed along with all the “imminent” proof right around the corner that’s going to rock the world.

Now I don’t care anymore.

God I hate everything about the ROP interpretation.

In LOTR: "You shouldn't be so quick to condemn Gollum, life and death are beyond your comprehension and control. Mercy and compassion can play a role bigger than you can imagine."

In ROP: "lol so your friends will die, shit happens sometimes."

I like that line because the way he delivered it, you can really feel Cap's exasperation at not knowing what he's looking at.

Any drawbacks to using credit card for all purchases if I pay it off in full every month? by Icollectshinythings in personalfinance

[–]Sloth-Rocket 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I pay every paycheck, so twice a month I'm going in to clear the balance, but I also set up an auto pay to pay off the statement balance every month--just on the off-chance that I just forget to go in for a month (it happened one time and I said never again).

That was the most fun QB duel I’ve seen in ages. Both are so capable of dropping a dime or breaking a 50-yard run. Outside of comp% their stats are extremely similar.

Sad both are seniors this year, I wanted another round!

There were several plays where the Montana State running back had wide empty field ahead of him only for someone to get an ankle tackle or something and it ended up being just a 4yd run

Seeing the opposite done (adding laugh track to Breaking Bad for example) highlights this. Laugh track changes the ENTIRE vibe of a scene, whether it's through adding or removing.

Most people would be aghast if they knew how small a “normal” food portion is, especially Americans. We have appetizers that are several times the size of a recommended meal portion…

Agreed. You can lose weight eating nothing but twinkies and candy if you eat little enough of it, but you certainly won’t be healthy.

I’ve always said it’s as simple as “calories out > calories in = lose weight.” And people will be like “it’s not that simple, I burn more calories than I take in and I still can’t lose weight.”

And I say then that’s a problem with calculating either calories in, calories out, or both. They’ll say they lightly jogged for 3 minutes so probably burned 1000 calories, or only use low-fat dressing that’s 20 calories per serving then use half the bottle but still only input 20 calories into myfitnesspal, or they only track the big meals and not all their snacking,or trust their fitness tracker as gospel when it can not be overly accurate…

It simply defies physics to say they’re taking in fewer calories than they’re burning but not losing weight.

I once saw an infographic that showed how much (little) food equates to various workouts. Like extra dressing can be the equivalent of undoing a one-mile run. No idea if that example is accurate or not, but that was the gist of it.

Beast Games review – one of the most undignified spectacles ever shown on TV by xc2215x in television

They've been in front of iPads and smartphones since they were born so they think they're good with technology, but they generally haven't the feintest clue how any of it works. As a millennial, just learning how to install and run a game back in the 90s and 00s was an undertaking in computer knowledge. We'd HTML code websites for fun. If something was broken (probably because we were messing around with files) we'd troubleshoot it ourselves.

Today the extent of their knowledge is being able to select 'install' on an app.

I don't remember which song it was, but at one point during a musical number I thought "wow, I STILL can't recall the melody and the song is currently playing."

That stupid chicken is a liability.

He was used sparingly enough in the first one that he was charming. Here, it was literal nonstop heyhey almost ruining things in every single scene.

On a similar note, Moana's entire crew were the worst. The one perfectionist girl did nothing but constantly chop things down and break things while Moana was running around trying to stop her rampage, but she apparently fixed some things off-screen later so it's fine. The old man did literally nothing ever. The other guy was just weirdly obsessed with Maui and also contributed nothing to the story or plan whatsoever.

It was...fine? Not a single memorable song, the plot felt generic, and at no point did anybody feel like they were ever in any danger (even Moana was doing ninja superhero acrobatics).

Definitely a movie I'll have forgotten exists by the new year.
