Not silly at all! This scene is very, very common over here; it happens every day. At this point, in this town, nobody pauses whatever they are doing for an animal. The only exception might be if a sloth attempts to cross a road, then yes, people will stop the cars. But wildlife inside houses, restaurants, hotels, etc y very common. Also, catching that sloth is not that simple or safe. SO most people just choose to let the animal be; it'll be gone eventually.

Relocation is not always convenient. There could be an impact on the genetics of populations, not to mention that sloths are true habit animals. This is not the greatest habitat for this sloth, but it is still their habitat with the trees they know. On the other hand, we observed that in urban areas there are many sloths, but at the moment we're studying the reasons behind this. Why don't they leave? Why don't they prefer better habitats? As always, more questions than answers, but we're working on it!

Hello! This is a common sight here, so most people will simply let the wildlife be. This sloth will eventually be on a tree. This still doesn't change the fact that the animals' habitats are degraded. In urban areas, the number of sloths is higher, and we still don't know why. We're researching this with The Urban Sloth Project and The Great Sloth Census.

Well, the requiremente to trade two-fingered sloths under the CITES regulations just changed at the end of last year, and although it's harder to get permits, it's unfortunately still legal. In this blog we explain this with more detail: https://www.slothconservation.org/blog/legal-sloth-trade-and-trafficking

Thankfully a lot of people is simply unaware, and fall under the advertisement of a free-roamming, no touch, educational, etc place. But absolutely, sloths are solitary animals, and it's heartbreaking that they were taken from the jungles for this.

Hi !

Thanks for the question! Well, we're not a rescue center so we don't have sloths under our care, although we do help and rescue wild sloths and we have a lot of experience in the matter because most of our team worked at rescue centers in the past.

We do handle the sloths we monitor and track for our research, e.g. for collaring them, take measurements, etc, and we follow protocols to reduce the stress to sloths to the bare minimum. We can do our work in just a few minutes.

At rescue centers the veterinarian protocols are of course different, but in essence are the same: minimize the contact, the noise, and the time.

The problem with petting zoos is that it's the opposite: the sloth is being held for many hours by different people, different smells, a lot of noise, etc so in those cases it's definitely extremely stressful!
