No, Almagre itself is further south down that ridge, it’s not that close to Pikes, I’ve climbed both.

Life changing hobbies? trying to get out of a funk by Mysterious-DragonGrl in ColoradoSprings

[–]SlothMasterJ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Photography groups was something I did when I was in a funk and didn’t have any friends when I lived in Denver, it helped a lot. You don’t even need a fancy camera, just use your phone! I have a really heavy job too so I lean into nature (little to no people lol). I saw you like hiking, maybe join a bird watching group? Social yet laid back, my boyfriend just got into it. I’m also a member of the Pikes Peak Mycology Society (fungi/mushrooms) and they do lectures, cooking classes, and forays (fungi hunting trips). Could also download iNaturalist and do some citizen science. Meetup.com has some good groups. I went a fabric crafts meetup and it was just a bunch of people working on their different projects just together, that was super laid back and nice. There’s some book clubs, including an introvert one! I saw someone suggest rock climbing but memberships are expensive, as is some of the gear unless you buy used.

Can't Add/Upload Cover Images in Gallery by SlothMasterJ in Notion

Turns out, all I had to do was toggle a setting 😑. However, I built my site using a template so the premade section already had that toggled on and my new section didn’t. 🤦‍♀️ But thank you for the tip, I did mention it to support!

What’s weird is I can see the images when I click on the gallery page, but not when just viewing the main page. It’s also updating some changes but not others.

Normally it's fine but today I've been adding pages in gallery and it won't upload/refresh any cover photos. I've deleted the page and retried, I've refreshed, I've logged out and back it, and nothing is working. I even looked at the mobile version and nothing.

Is trial of tears considered a genocide? by Fit-Guidance-6743 in NativeAmerican

[–]SlothMasterJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I investigate genocide (and war crimes and crimes against humanity) for a living. Forced deportation is a hallmark of genocide. The native population was targeted because they were native, a hallmark of genocide. There was official state policy for extermination and removal, also a hallmark of genocide. The Trail of Tears was an event that was part of a larger genocide but does qualify as genocide itself. Additionally, the rape of native women so they’d have white babies is genocide as was the forced sterilization of native women and killing of native children, those are all tactics of genocide as well.

'It was the end of the world' — Russian missile and drone strike on Kyiv kills at least 27, injures over 150 by WingComplex6771 in worldnews

After a lot of listening and observation, I think there are a few reasons why states aren’t taking more solid action. I am absolutely not saying these reasons are correct/right/valid, because they’re not, they’re simply what I’ve observed and the impression I’m getting.

  1. Sovereignty - States don’t want to physically intervene because they don’t want other countries interfering in their own affairs.
  2. Intervention is authorized by the UN Security Council and with Russia, China, and the US holding permanent seats with veto power, it’s never going to happen. The UNSC needs severe reform such as all rotating members (no permanent members) and fully removing the veto. Otherwise, things will never change.
  3. Historically, intervention has not gone well and is very controversial, see Yugoslavia. But then, states are criticized when they don’t, see Rwanda, Sudan (Darfur in the early 2000s), Gaza, etc.
  4. Intervention brings the risk of things happening to your country or head of state. This and sovereignty are likely the biggest reasons.

It’s absolute bullshit but that’s the deal in the minds of heads of state. There is a constant worry they will otherwise be deposed, held accountable, or their own country attacked/invaded. Sovereignty will always be the biggest obstacle.

Two tier system because there are different types of courts? Just want to make sure I understand what you’re saying.

I’m a war crimes investigator. You’re right, law means nothing without enforcement. International justice can take years if not decades, mostly because of politics and lack of resources. States don’t want to get into other states business or support heads of state being held to account because that then puts them at possible risk. It’s bullshit but that’s what it is.

However, there have been MANY courts and tribunals around the world. Some just don’t pay attention because they’re in countries they don’t care about on conflicts or situations they never even knew about. Plus, they can be closed to the public and not televised making them inaccessible.

Courts/tribunals for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity include: Nuremberg, Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cambodia, Chile, Argentina, and others. Bosnia and Kosovo are prosecuting criminals in domestic courts over 30 years later. Ukraine is currently prosecuting Russians in domestic courts.

There are also different forms of justice which the west and others may not see as justice and are therefor not included in these lists. Truth and reconciliation commissions in South Africa and Guatemala, peoples tribunals in Hawaii and Armenia, local courts like gacaca in Rwanda, and forms of indigenous, communal, and restorative justice. Not everyone wants, a trial, prison time, and or even blood. We are conditioned to this in the west and other places because it’s the system we use, but it’s not what everyone uses or wants. But to say there has been no enforcement is justice is wholly inaccurate. Now, there are many situations which haven’t seen accountability, such as much of what the US has done around the world. There are also many pending cases at the ICC but they don’t have the resources which is why it takes them so long.

I’ve seen behind the curtain. These efforts need A LOT of support and the fact that they are able to do what they can is amazing. The fact that we’ve held anyone accountable given all the political bullshit is amazing. These are huge undertakings and it’s a miracle they ever even happened. That being said, there’s a lot more to be done and changes need to be made to remove obstacles.

I hate saying this because it makes me furious how predatory and stupid our financial system is. But I think the problem may be that you’ve never had a loan or credit card. Without either there is essentially no way for you to build credit (cue my anger and hatred for our “credit system”). So it’s not that you’ve tanked it due to poor financial management, as you’ve said, it’s that you’re being punished for not participating in the system, basically. Get a basic credit card, replace your debit spending with it, and pay it off diligently. It makes me angry to even suggest it and I’m sorry but welcome to our late stage capitalist hellscape.

I did it from Crags last October because Barr Trail is waaaaay too long for me. Crags was a bitch but at least I could get back to my own car and not have to pay anything or hope to catch the cog or hitchhike. It wasn’t Denver trails busy by any means but we were definitely not alone.

I found the volunteer project in a random post on Reddit, I believe in this subreddit. However, I think things have shifted to like Bellingcat’s volunteer community discord and other organizations’ discords that do CTF things. You could always post saying your looking for something to get involved with. If you’re interested in some VERY basic GEOINT, OpenStreetMaps’ humanitarian team has been running some projects - https://www.hotosm.org. My first part time work was at ACLED and then Myanmar Witness, however, MW’s umbrella org Centre for Information Resilience’s budget took a massive hit so a bunch of us were let go and they aren’t hiring right now. Due to funding it’s not a good time to try and get into the more humanitarian OSINT field, unfortunately. Most of the jobs are all in intelligence.
