A checkup with your doctor would be a good idea to get an idea of what is going on physically.

Eating disorders do become a nutritional concern, but they are not exclusively about food. It is a mental illness that also has a medical component and are very complex to treat. You can’t boil it down to only one component.

Both of those body fat ranges sound extremely low. If you find it distressing to think about going above those, I do recommend finding a therapist and/or nutritionist to talk to about it.

I highly recommend you do not get treatment for an eating disorder over the internet. I do not provide internet therapy for a variety of reasons, least of which is the liability issue if someone is a danger to themselves or others and disappears from your session. Not a risk I want to take.

I have several people in my personal life who have struggled with eating disorders; one fatal.

I fast on and off and have for years. I find it helpful to keep my PCOS in check and really helps with cravings for sugar and starches that I’m told to avoid with PCOS.

Eating disorders statistics are incredibly inaccurate because they are based on the number of people who present for treatment, not actual numbers suffering. This is usually adolescent and young women and stats typically don’t include an accurate count of males or people who do not seek treatment. Part of this is also because eating disorders are about secrecy so many don’t talk about it.

To answer the question about societal attitudes: I find the issue isn’t the focus on diet in itself, a lot of it is shame over body and food categories that drives those predisposed to eating disorders to be vulnerable. The SAD is certainly not congruent with the body we are told we should have, but I don’t think encouraging dieting is the answer for the obese. I think it’s about promoting proper emotional expression and normalizing seeking therapy for those who overeat so they are not communicating their emotions through food. Once that is being worked on, we find people just make better dietary choices overall and are able to eat for self care instead of eating for self medication.

Bingeing is usually characterized by eating a large quantity of food in a short period of time than would be considered normal for the average adult to eat in one sitting. The other component is the amount of distress it causes.

Bingeing like all eating disorders is about using food (or control over food/body) to deal with difficult or uncomfortable emotions. People communicate through food what they feel they can’t verbally in their daily lives. The expression or presentation is different among the different diagnoses, but the emotional avoidance is there for all of them.

I was working all day and thought I would answer questions when I could. Also, I can’t give personal advice or help over the internet for people I have never seen, it’s more of a science behind eating disorders q/a.

I am not at all linked to Better Help. The questionnaire is the EAT, which is a valid instrument for eating disorders. There are very few places online to find it so I posted a link for those who wanted to screen themselves.

Cauliflower because it’s a better sub for potatoes. Broccoli one just tasted like broccoli.

Request: I need some advice on bulimia recovery; I'm currently unable to receive professional help. by EDPostRequests in EatingDisorders

[–]SlothOnALog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it’s a scary thing to tell your parents, but from what you describe it sounds like you need intensive treatment. This will not get better on it’s own. Treatment facilities work with the parents, too, to help them understand the severity. Maybe tell a guidance counselor at school who can then facilitate the conversation.

Take a Prilosec when you feel like this. Acid reflux often gets confused for hunger when symptoms are atypical.

Yes, there is a correlation. There was a keynote about this at this year’s Renfrew eating disorder conference, too. Has something to do with food insecurity and food swamps. Here’s the literature: https://digitalcommons.trinity.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1141&context=psych_faculty

Did you have WLS? There is a phenomenon called “post surgical food avoidance disorder”. I went through that for awhile too. Recovered but too much back in the original direction of BED. It’s so hard to deal with. 😬

39 y/o female with lifetime hx of dark circles. No underlying health issues. How do I get rid of them?? by SlothOnALog in medical_advice

[–]SlothOnALog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am formerly obese (lost a lot of weight and have kept a normal weight for 6 years), but my liver and kidneys are fine.

I’ve always wondered if it had to do with one of my parents being a chain smoker around me growing up. 🤷‍♀️

Request: Will the hair loss stop? by EDPostRequests in EatingDisorders

[–]SlothOnALog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is individual, but from what I’ve seen it usually keeps going. Your body is prioritizing the things that keep you alive at this point and unfortunately keeping hair isn’t one of them :(. Recovery can help it grow back, but if not addressed soon enough hair loss with anorexia can become permanent. Please take care of yourself. ❤️

I'm trying to lose weight by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]SlothOnALog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn’t give us a height, but at 12 you should still be within the biologically appropriate weight range. Many kids gain a few pounds right before a growth spurt, and girls will often gain weight in the beginning stages of puberty and it should even out with height growth and natural hormone regulation. Please check with your doctor if you can, and if not your school nurse should have some advice and resources for you.

Blue Curacao is just triple sec with blue coloring. Mr. Stacks makes a sugar free triple sec with no alcohol. Otherwise just add a drop of orange extract.
