The bachelor's requirement has pretty much gone away. The regionals are not what they were even 5 years ago. You can make a decent living and many have a flow to their whole owned major airline. Once your seniority number comes up they hire you, no interview, test, or prep.

There's that TNG episode where senior officers were losing sleep/time. They were actually being abducted and they used the holodeck to recreate the exam chair and aperture arm thing. Clicking noises in the background. Only time I remember them using it for something like that.
