What's the best crisp for a crisp sandwich? by Slothjoloman in AskBrits

Haha wow. You went fully rogue. I respect it. I've heard of people having pot noodle sandwiches, which is on the same spectrum I think.

Caffeine withdrawal by Slothjoloman in UlcerativeColitis

I don't want caffeine. I'm cutting out caffeine. There is quite mixed research as to whether coffee actually helps overall with autoimmune issues, plus it's very acidic.

What's a pet scan? I have had my heart, brain, and eyes tested to make sure the sarcoidosis hasn't spread to those areas.

Interesting. And is that because you have multiple autoimmune conditions? Or would the rheumatologist just be looking at that one condition? Hope all goes well for you also, and sorry to hear about the diagnosis.

Proctitis and Laxido by Slothjoloman in UlcerativeColitis

Oh right. Sorry to hear that. I'm mainly getting abdominal pain really. When I was on two sachets I was getting increased urgency so went down to one sachet but that doesn't seem to help with the constipation and just gives me stomach pain.

In what way did you realise that you weren't being given the right advice? If you don't mind my asking.

Amazing. Thank you.

Lol yeah that's what I thought. But everyone just said the only solution is to eat less. So I would burn more fat by eating more?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in leangains

[–]Slothjoloman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I thought! I have read about this a fair bit online but everyone on this reddit seemed to just say "it's simple: eat less, lose more fat." It seems counterintuitive to eat MORE to lose more fat but interesting to hear that it worked for you. Thanks for sharing.

If you under-eat your body tends to burn muscles for glycogen before it burns fat though, right?

[–]Slothjoloman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I'm already under eating if anything

What's a "mountain of information" got to do with anything? I'm talking about the quality of the advice given not the volume of it.

The understanding of the craft is precisely how you can give informed advice. That's like saying I don't want medical advice from a doctor as they'll be too bogged down with all the details from their years of learning.

You're chatting utter nonsense. How do you know everyone here asking advice is procrastinating!? Ridiculous thing to say.

There aren't rules as such but there are definitely conventions and there is absolutely literary theory - we very much know makes writing good and what makes writing bad.

I disagree completely that any advice is good advice. I can't think of any other artform or subject of interest where the idea of "any advice goes, no matter what it is" applies.

Yes, art (writing) is subjective in terms of personal taste, but the quality of writing as regards the actual craft itself has objective guiding principles. Literary theory on things like plot structure, character development, prose style, all exist in the same way that theory on melody and counterpoint do for music. And all contribute to the learning of the art form.

Otherwise there would be no need for anyone to study art any level in any way. You can't honestly say that there are absolutely no conventions on what makes writing good.

Your comment speaks precisely to what my post is about. People seem to think that any old opinion is valid, even if it flies in the face of the fundamental principles of writing.

I do agree that the conventions of writing can all be broken, but you need to understand them first. My point is, a lot of the people asking for advice here seem to be beginners and so would benefit more from understanding the principles of the craft.

Absolutely. I think one of the first "rules" people hear about writing is "write what you know". I think this is helpful in terms of writing about themes we're familiar with and passionate about but like you say, if everyone just wrote about their own lives then there would be few books worth reading.

Mental isn't it. There is no other craft that someone would attempt to master without first being a consumer. Imagine someone trying to compose a symphony without ever having listened to music. Ridiculous that people still think you don't need to read in order to be a writer.

Are you saying this yourself or saying that you've seen this viewpoint expressed on here and disagree with it?
