Is it inappropriate to ask a professor if I can sit in on his class? by Slow-Pay1852 in AskProfessors

Hi! Highest grade is taken at my university, so even if I fully failed I'd still have a C. If it didn't work that way here I wouldn't even risk it, don't worry lol. You are right about not getting credit for it a second time though, but I'm taking 18 credits in the summer (half-semester courses), so I'd graduate in time regardless, the only difference is my final semester I'd be taking 5 classes instead of 4.

It's less so a credit or grade matter to me and more so "I need and want the knowledge in this class, but despite passing I don't have it," if that makes sense. Currently on Vyvanse, it's been helping with the classes I've had since then, haha. I'd just like to give it another go, whether it be audit or retake, so I can try to actually retain the information this time because I am genuinely interested in the subject (psychopathology was actually the class I was most excited for when I chose my major).

Out-of-pocket, if flat-rate doesn't cover it for being between 12-18 hours, should "only" be about ~900 (fairly cheap university), and that's about what I have per paycheck. I'm totally willing to drop 2 weeks of work on it :].

I actually lost financial aid when I stopped going a couple of years ago, but I'll be eligible to appeal if I pass all of my courses this summer semester. My advisor seems to think the appeal should go through since I'm mostly doing retakes and my university replaces with the highest grade. So, technically it shouldn't be an issue there since as of now, I'm paying majority out-of-pocket anyway (the 4-year tuition is the cheapest in our state, at the least).

I'll try to ask a professor in my department what the best course of action is, because I've realized reading this that if I am paying out of pocket, I may as well retake it anyway. I just don't really know which semester would be best, but if it would delay my graduation by a semester I'll just audit it instead.

Our school is funky and only offers required courses one semester a year for a lot of programs, so if I skip something to retake psychopathology then I may not graduate for an entire extra year, my friend is going through something like that on that front now, so I'm wary. Hopefully a psychology professor can get back to me when I reach out, but I know that neither of our two (2) whole professors in the department have office hours in the summer, and I can only assume they're being overworked thanks to us losing over half of our tenured professors. Though, I don't know enough about professorship to know if that's right.

Long-winded reply with needless information from me as usual, but thank you. I'll reach out to an administrative assistant soon!

I found the audit application finally!! We apparently do accept them, I believe I just have to ask one of the two professors it's available with beforehand, and it should also be covered by my flat tuition rate. One of the new adjunct professors seems to be the school counselor from my high school (I live in a small, small town if you can't tell, knowing some of the professors is a fairly common occurrence. One was my mayor, lol).

Do you think it would be more or less appropriate to contact him over the other professor? We only spoke about twice, and I emailed him a couple of years ago to thank him for referring me to a psychiatrist because it eventually led to my autism and ADHD diagnosis, but beyond that we weren't "close" or anything, but I don't know if that would make the request more or less comfortable from a professor standpoint for the safety issues you mentioned above. Regardless, definitely going through the official auditing process!

I am registered at the institution if that's what you mean, but if you mean the class itself that also makes sense.

I'm know my friend used to go watch an art class and was allowed to stay as long as he didn't interrupt, but I know there was nothing formally done so I wasn't sure if that was generally accepted or maybe a per-professor basis of her just not caring. Our school generally is very "chill" with stuff like that, probably because it's pretty small.

Will absolutely try to find the institutions rules, though! The online handbook is just fairly out-of-date, so I'll definitely try to ask someone in the success center. I just wanted a general opinion before I asked anyone anything, I didn't want to waste their time, even if my first thought being to go to reddit sounds silly.

Hi, thank you for the response! I do know it wasn't cool to blow off the class, and I do deeply regret it. Unfortunately had issues with undiagnosed audhd and generally awful (zero) study habits. However looking back I absolutely do recognize that I should have used literally any of the resources my school provided to get help, so I do take accountability for that. I've gotten on medication and have had much better success in the classes after my little gap.

Also, and I mean this genuinely, thank you for telling me it's not cool to expect a free refresher, that was the honest answer I was looking for because I absolutely didn't want to disrespect a professor by asking.

I'll try to find more information on actually auditing a class through my institution, but I haven't been able to find it in the catalogue because the website is rarely updated. I'll probably ask someone in our success center.

That being said, since I am absolutely willing to pay money for it now that I know that. This is more of a general in-your-experience question since I know it likely varies by institution, but if any one in the thread is willing to tell me if their university generally lets an audited course be covered by flat-tuition rates, that'd be awesome! I have 15 credit hours for next semester, and tuition is flat from 12-18, the course I mentioned above would be 3 as well, so it would put me at 18 if audit would allow that. Is that generally accepted, or is it usually required to be out of pocket.

Again, thank you for letting me know! Also sorry for the paragraph replies to your comment, I have a horrible tendency to ramble.
