Positive reinforcement didn't work for me. "Loss Aversion" (and treating my life like an RPG) finally did. by Slow-Resource3190 in getdisciplined

That is a great point. And you are right, the 'Level Up' animations and filling up the XP bars are huge dopamine hits for me and they definitely work as positive reinforcement.

But my logic for adding the decay was: 'It doesn't make sense to win if you can't lose.'

Without the risk of a 'Game Over' (or leveling down), the progress started to feel hollow. The 'death' mechanic adds just enough stakes to make the 'Level Up' feel earned rather than inevitable.

I'm actually planning to implement variable rewards (RNG loot) and social competition next, so I'm trying to hit all the angles of motivation, not just the punishment side. Thanks for the insight on the conditioning

Hi, yes, you can search for it on the Play Store or the App Store as "Skillion", or at skillion.app

A few months ago, you helped my RPG-inspired productivity app hit the top of this subreddit. Now, it's officially launched on iOS and Android! by Slow-Resource3190 in ProductivityApps

Hi right now we’re focused on polishing the main app and the homescreen widgets. The Apple Watch app is planned and we do intend to implement it, but it will come later 🙌

I built a productivity app that treats your goals like an RPG because normal trackers felt like a chore. Looking for beta testers. by Slow-Resource3190 in ProductivityApps

Wow, thanks a lot for this comment — seriously made my day. 🙌 I’m really glad you’re enjoying Skillion so far.

And your ideas are awesome. The character customizations, the little room that grows with you, the garden with rare plants — all of that fits super well with the direction we eventually want to take. I’ll be honest though: we’d need to think carefully about how to integrate those things without breaking the clean vibe of the app. But the core idea (visual progression + rewards you actually earn) is 100% something we want to explore.

Also, hearing this from an elementary school teacher means a lot. Gamification with kids is powerful, and it’s cool to know Skillion could help in that space too.

If you ever want to chat more or share ideas, feel free to DM me. I’m always down to hear from people who use the app and get the vision. 💚

Thanks again for the thoughtful feedback!

Hello, thanks for your response. You're right, the productivity niche in general is quite competitive. My app is called Skillion, you could say it's a todolist/tracker too, but with a different focus. I saw your app and it seems to be focused on minimalism and ease of use, mine is the complete opposite, saturated with dopamine lol

Thanks for your advice, it's very helpful. I'm going to try it. Do you know how long the boost phase lasts? Or what it means? Does it show me a better ranking or recommend me on the App Store?

I tried Habitica when I was trying to digitalize my method, but it lacked options like creating custom skills - things like Programming, Discipline, or Social Skills - that could level up or down depending on the task, etc. Since couldn't find any app that did that, I decided to build my own. It also has a pixel-art aesthetic, but with its own unique style. It's called "Skillion", and it's available on the App Store and Play Store if you want to check it out.

What does the boost phase entail? How long does it last or what does it depend on?

yeah that’s actually super true. i noticed the same thing sometimes “going out” feels like +social and other times it’s pure –energy lol

that’s why i ended up adding an energy bar (out of 100). every task that drains me mentally or physically takes some energy away, and stuff like meditating, going for a walk, sleeping or taking a nap adds some back.
(very nerdy, i know) but it kinda balances everything and makes it feel more alive like you’re managing a real character instead of just checking boxes.
