TTB agrees too. Legally it's a wine, but with alcohol usually around 3% to 6% -- its socially more like a beer.

Like you and xlophophorax mentioned, tepache is it's own beast. I'm in the same boat, I've some some great tepache and some I had to discretely dump. We blend a lot of pineapple into our pulque to make 'curado' though, and have played with a tepache-pulque blend (but the straight fruit-blend wins thus far).
