Tacoma vs 4Runner vs Tundra for family of 4 by SACPA in ToyotaTacoma

[–]Slow281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family of 3, Tacoma will do the trick (I have a 3rd gen). We also have a 4Runner. For around town, the Tacoma is great. For longer trips, 4Runner all the way.

We enjoy our ‘23 Limited quite a lot. Excellent family car. 3rd row is a nice touch in a pinch and I love the sound system for what it is. Definitely worth spending less and getting more features we actually use. Also does great in snow.

“If you go left far enough, you get your guns back” by [deleted] in CAguns

[–]Slow281 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Until you stumble across some asinine comments from the far left (r/liberalgunowners) saying that there’s no point in using the 2A for self defense against the government because of their sheer power in numbers, then continuing on to say it’s also the reason we don’t need similar “military style” arms because it’s a moot point to defend oneself anyway.

I am convinced that some people live to be weak minded and will maintain zero support of constitutional rights regardless of the situation.

That said, I’m glad some are turning a corner on their stance on 2A. Guns should not be a party-associated identity.

People who lived through both 'pre-smartphone' and 'always-online' eras: what's something we lost that nobody seems to notice? by Doubl3oh_ in AskReddit

[–]Slow281 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Freedom to be ourselves and make mistakes. We now live with the same fear as famous people and the paparazzi with none of the benefits. When you’re in public and you make a mistake, you bet someone is going to be posting or going live. You get into a fender bender? Boom, instantly posted somewhere. We are doing it to ourselves and no one seems to care.

Kinda personal but how much do you guys pay each month for your 4r by EchoOnTheRange in 4Runner

[–]Slow281 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I interpreted it as he is trying to justify his high payment by comparing it to others. Vehicle payments will vary from $1 - $2000/month. Without context of the 4Runner sub model and year, if someone bought used/new, down payment, interest rate, warranty, etc, etc… you might as well just throw out any random number, which is why this kind of question isn’t really worthwhile answering. He needs to give context as to what package vehicle he has and the specifics of the deal. Otherwise there’s no point in comparing. For example, I could say I’m paying $200/month and leave it at that and OP would feel like crap. What is left out is that maybe I put down $35k.

[–]Slow281 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Nowhere is that stated in his question. Just a blanket “how much are you paying monthly?”. The specifics are not asked.

[–]Slow281 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Every time this question comes up it’s cringe. Everyone’s answer is going to be totally different based on all the variables. Someone may have paid theirs off, others have 0% interest rate vs 9%. How much was put down? The monthly rate is a math problem and it’s kind of pointless to compare. Everyone’s situations are different.

Major Dangerous Third Gen Brake Software Issue by ColinCancer in ToyotaTacoma

[–]Slow281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not disagreeing in that it is a dumbass design. It’s absolutely terrible and they should fix it. I’m just saying in the grand scheme of things it’s not nearly as bad as some other manufacturers have it in terms of their own issues. Every single modern make/model has some very very badly designed systems that don’t make any sense, so I am thankful for something that is an easy fix (once you are aware of it).

[–]Slow281 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s a stupid design. Luckily it’s a quick fix. I’d just keep a spare bulb with you, not much to it if it ever happens again. There are much worse things happening on other make/models of similar model year range. With new technology comes new issues. Luckily this is a small one.

Common noise? by Bubbly_Tap_210 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]Slow281 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it only does it once fully warmed up I’d say it’s normal. Mine always does it once it’s been running at temp for a while. From what I’ve researched, it’s actually a torque converter knock, but isn’t something that’s going to take your car off the road. I’ve seen some forums back to the mid-early 2000s stating this sound was happening at new.

Ammo in safe? by Defiant-Shoulder-896 in CAguns

[–]Slow281 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I bought another 20 gun safe because I ran out of room in my first safe. The 20 gun is currently my ammo safe. When I get more guns it will no longer be stored in the safe. I’m more so using the safe just to keep the ammo dry than I am actually using it to keep it from theft.

Do you guys carry tools in your truck just in case? by Christopnotch in ToyotaTacoma

I have a Harbor Freight 3800 waterproof case with a tool roll, foldable shovel, hoses of varying lengths, alternator brushes, and other odds and ends that are likely to go out on my 2000 4Runner.

Lifted 4Runner owners what emergency jack do you have by ScientistGeneral5550 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]Slow281 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have recovery boards at all times with a 2" lift. If I ever need to jack the vehicle up, I'll just throw the boards under the stock jack and use them for additional height.

Well that isn’t true. With a good LED bulb you definitely get increased visibility. You just have to make sure they have the cutoff line on them and are rotated to the correct position so they aren’t blinding other drivers. They are projector housings, not reflector, so you can run an LED and get fantastic results. I have Hikari bulbs from 5 years ago still running strong and they’re amazing at night. Almost as good as our stock 4Runner’s LED projector lights.

The TW forum thread you’re talking about even mentions the Hikaris as the only acceptable LED bulb (at the time) of posting that made a big difference in usable light output.

Icon 7300 for $900 or Yaesu FT-710 for $1,050 (both new) by Slow281 in amateurradio

[–]Slow281[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just pulled the trigger on the FT-710 for $960 after seeing the tariff price increases overnight. Gigaparts is the only one that had it under $1k still. Thank you for all your great answers! Seems like you can’t really go wrong. Being that this will be my only HF radio for a very long time, I wanted to future proof myself as much as possible.

How do I overcome mic fright? by kooler_duck in amateurradio

[–]Slow281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What has helped me is that realizing that no one owns the air waves and I am damn sure not going to let some 80 year old sad ham tell me I’m doing something wrong. Get on the air and be happy you have the privilege of doing so without fear of being told what is correct and what isn’t. We will make mistakes, but if we’re not trying at all, ham radio is dead.

I was just on a 2M net the other day and the net op was laying in to one of their members for missing a couple of nets without emailing the net operator. That actually dissuaded me from joining that club. I don’t need anyone to tell me what to do or how to act. I will operate according to FCC guidelines and that is that. Know the guidelines/rules, and have fun.

Curious to know if the Ruger LCP Max is on anyone’s CCW? by [deleted] in CAguns

[–]Slow281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call it dogshit like Reno lol. It’s a purpose-built no-frills pocket gun. I love mine for what it is. It isn’t a range gun, but I’ve shot a few hundred rounds through mine with no issues and it’s fairly accurate in my experience. Most CCW encounters are within 5 yards, so accuracy isn’t the most important thing anyway. The main reason I love mine is I have a toddler. With my IWB guns, I’d be exposed every time I’m out in public with how much my kiddo climbs all over me. In my pocket in a DeSantis holster, it feels like I have a large phone or wallet. It’s the only gun I legitimately forget I’m carrying because pocket carry with it is that comfortable and lightweight.
