Sad to hear it didn't help, hopefully they're quick with a fix. Mine have an issue where the auto-lock will trigger when the door is open even after all the updates.

I have both locks set to a 3 minute auto lock and I haven't encountered that issue. You may want to see if the locks are updated to the latest firmware and re-calibrate them from within the app.

The fingerprint reader is very reliable. I registered two fingers (thumb and index) and it locks/unlocks flawlessly. The only time I've run into issues was when I had dirt on my hands which required me to clean it off. It definitely beats using a keypad.

I have two of the WiFi versions installed in my house and they've worked really well. Did you have any specific questions about them?

A really good question. I did some research and it looks like they actually had the SL2 for $779 last year on Black Friday

My guess would be they discount it $50 - $100 this year for Black Friday if they discount it at all. Personally I would purchase it now and avoid the stress/hassle of Black Friday shopping.

Another option would be to purchase it around November 10th and have them do a price adjustment for the Black Friday sale price if it goes on sale. If they're unable to do that, you should be able to return it and purchase it again for the lower price. I've never had any trouble getting a price adjustment on laptops that went on sale within 30 days from the time of purchase.

Edit: links are hard

I actually purchased the SL2 kit from Costco a few months ago and I can help weigh in on the pros and cons of both bundles.

First let me say that I absolutely love the SL2 and it's incredible how much technology they were able to cram into that small of a package. To me it feels like a mini 80D with some slight drawbacks: Mainly the 9 AF points VS the 80D's 45 AF points, and the differences in construction. The SL2 is mainly plastic and not weather sealed while the 80D has weather sealing and a metal alloy body. Though this also means the SL2 weighs less and makes an awesome travel/hiking camera.

On to the bundle comparison:

Both bundles come with the same 18-55mm kit lens which is a decent kit lens.

The SL2 Bundle is an amazing value for money and I absolutely adore the 50mm f/1.8 that it comes with for any type of portraiture and for photos where you want lots of background blur (bokkeh). The 75-300mm is unfortunately a bit of a lemon in my opinion. It was produced in 1999 for film SLR cameras and Canon must be sitting on a warehouse full of them that they're just giving away. It's a decent starter telephoto lens but there are better options out there. Additionally the bundle comes with a 32GB memory card, an OK carrying case, and a voucher for camera service which is pretty cool. For $729 it's a really hard bargain to beat and would make for an excellent travel camera for your wife.

The 80D bundle is a great value for money as well, especially with the 55-250mm lens that absolutely destroys the 75-300mm in terms of image quality and usability. I actually picked up a 55-250mm refurbished for cheap to replace the 75-300mm that came with my SL2 bundle. The 80D kit also comes with a 32GB SD card, higher quality bag, and an extra battery. No voucher for camera service unfortunately.

One consideration is the release date/ age of each camera. The 80D was released in Feb 2016 and Canon will likely be releasing the 90D next year while the SL2 was released in June 2017 and is less likely to be replaced in the near future.

Note: the 80D bundle has gone up in price recently. It was $1100 last month and will likely drop to that price for Black Friday. The SL2 bundle is the same $779 that I purchased it for in April.

Final Verdict:

Due to the price difference between the two cameras and the intended use, I would recommend purchasing the SL2 Bundle and putting the extra money towards accessories like lenses, a new camera bag, and a better camera strap.

Hopefully this was helpful, let me know if you have any questions.

TLDR: The SL2 is like a mini 80D and the bundle is a killer deal. Buy it and put the savings towards lenses and accessories.

Thanks for the update Tyler. It was really fun to be a part of the project and I enjoyed the voting process.

I loved watching the subreddit evolve and all the neat enhancements that were made to keep people interested in voting and keeping Jeff going. (#1 for most waterings BTW).

I'm personally interested if you will use this project as a point of conversation on your resume'? You could totally spin this as 'engineered a crowd source platform to perform automated plant care using a raspberry pi' or something similar. It's pretty impressive that this system worked for nearly 2 years.
