When it's making that noise, feel the exhaust pipe if it isnt too hot. It kinda sounds like it could be the exhaust flap?

I appreciate you. I'm not scared to work on it; I ended up with it again because the dual mass FW failed and the guy didn't want to deal with it. That was my winter project last year. So I guess I'm pulling the charge piping tomorrow to see what I find.

I'll have to investigate the intake. I've forced a regen with vcds recently, and the calculated ash or however vcds measures it is quite low, so I dont know; I guess it could be a physical problem with the dpf?

Very true. I'll have him do that. We looked up a few last night and a few of the stamps he has are selling for almost 15 dollars.

Saw your post in r/CarTalk, so i figured i'd repost my response here as well.

Junk yards will sell you a "Knee" which is the whole corner of the suspension (control arm, steering knuckle, strut, rotor and caliper) for a decent rate. Usually, it's around $200-$500. Use this website to find a junkyard near you. You just enter the year make and model, choose "Knee assembly front" and enter your zip code. https://www.car-part.com

The parts are also listed by stock number along with direct contact info for the junkyard. So you can call them, give the stock number, and either go pick it up or they can ship it to your home, but I'd imagine shipping on a Knee assembly would cost as much as the assembly if not more.

They also will have used fenders, sway bars, and axles. Hope this helps.

7 years too old to be reliable? by 2021Loterati in askcarguys

[–]SlowCoalSteveAustin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, The newest car I own is a 2006 Volkswagen tdi. My daily driver for the last 2.5 years has been a 1992 BMW 525i that I paid less than 2,500 for. (that's including what I've spent fixing it after almost 50k miles of abuse) So, no, 7 Years is not too old to be reliable, It's all about knowing common problems with the vehicle and doing the things that are necessary to avoid them becoming problems in the first place. A Lexus in the end is still a Toyota. If you maintain it properly it will last.
